I was in Orlando a week or so ago and drove over to POR to check out the walking situation. Some of the standard rooms are far. And I mean far away from the food court and buses.
POR is absolutely gorgeous and the walkways are beautiful. We had stayed there before, but we stayed in a RR so I went to check out the Alligator Bayou side. I did some "practice" walks to see if my mom or small children would be okay doing them, and I decided that it would not be comfortable for them.
I have an upcoming solo trip and decided on Pop over POR, partially because POR is heavily wooded and some of the trails to the buses seem like places I would not want to walk by myself or with a young child late at night. I have never felt unsafe at Disney, but I would be concerned about returning to the resort at 1 am and walking alone on those trails. Pop is open and brighter and does not seem nearly as big to me.
Another issue I have with POR is that it has multiple bus stops, which can be frustrating with a young child. Generally bus service was good, but we had a couple of times when sharing buses not very much fun.
If having a pool slide is important to your son, and if queen sized beds are important, then POR is a no brainer. I cannot stay value with my husband because he will not sleep in a double bed with me (or with anyone, I think

), but I took a trip once with just my daughter who was 9 at the time and we had an absolute blast staying at Pop. She loved the big wheel and the Mickey phone and all the statues, and we had such a fabulous trip. I think that for only two people and for a savings of $800, Pop is definitely my choice. You can even buy the dining plan with those savings and have some great character meals- and stay preferred for convenience.
