So it's been said that All Star Music has a huge layout and the walk to the non preferred rooms can be tiring and take several minutes. Is it the same way at Pop Century? With my mom coming on our next trip to WDW in 2019, she's going to want a room with a coffee maker. And I believe the newly renovated rooms at Pop have one??

Yes and yes.

I've never stayed at ASMusic so I can't compare but we stayed in a standard room at Pop and didn't find the walk bad at all. It was a really short walk, in fact. We were in the 70s section and I'm hoping for that again for our trip in March.

I think the difference is in the layout. Each All Star Resort is laid out sort of rectangular with the lobby building along one of the short ends, so if you’re at the opposite end it can be a bit of a walk. Pop has the lobby building centered along one of the long sides of the rectangle, which places it in a more central location overall. I stayed in the farthest room in building 7 at Pop and the walk was not bad at all (and I am not an avid walker).

Maybe these can help?

I’ve never stayed at Music but I can tell you from many, many experiences that I’ve never been assigned a room at Pop that I’ve felt was miles from anything.

Combo of all of the above. MUSIC is laid out different than the other two AllStars and POP. Movies, Sports and POP have a layout that puts the main hub/bus centrally located along the long axis of the resorts. Music is laid out with the standard at one end and the main hub at the other end. The rooms closest to the hub are suites and preferred. You can actually be in a standard room at POP and be VERY close to the main hub.

At Pop even when we have been in the back of the resort the walk wasn't bad. We were in building 9 in the 80's last trip and it was very convenient to the bus stop and food court via the sidewalk along the 90's parking lot.

I suggest looking at the layouts of the resorts by doing a google search.
You'll see that they have completely different layouts.
ASMu is more of a front to back layout with the family suites and preferred rooms taking up the front sections.
POP has more of a side to side layout with the preferred rooms being closer to the middle section.
I love staying in a standard room at POP because its cheaper and the walk isn't bad.
I usually request lake view in the 50's section.
Yes the refurb added coffee makers. Not something I'm interested in but a nice upgrade for most.

I've been preferred in the 70s, sure it was a short walk. But every time I opened my door, disco music....don't get me wrong, excellent theming. But I would have loved a longer walk somewhere else to not hear that music.

I think we were poolview in the 50s, that wasn't too bad a walk, but I was in college so I doubt I would have cared about how far a walk may or may not have been.

All of the buildings at Pop are shaped like a capital letter “T” with an elevator in the crux of the T. So if you are not staying on the ground floor, you will exit the building from the exact same spot whether your room is preferred or standard.

If you want to be close to the bus stop and food court, request rooms in the 60s or 70s or buildings 1 or 3 in the 50s. I personally found our room in Building 4 with a lakeside view was perfect. We could see MK fireworks from there, it was convenient to everything and “lakeview” is standard.
