Hi We are renting a house in Nov. 6-16 that has a pool but no cover. Owner said they would turn the heat on the day we arrive. I can see that its rented mid Oct. for two weeks then vacant for two weeks unknown if they are heating the pool.Do you think we would be able to use it the first day or two? Never had a pool and not sure how the Fla temps would affect it.Anyone have any practical experience with a situation like this? About what we can expect as far as swim-ability would be?

It sounds like the temperature of your pool on arrival will be weather and temperature dependent. Other factors like whether it is South facing or in shade for part of the day will probably effect the temperature as well. If you are paying extra for pool heat per day and the cost is not factored in to your daily rental costs, you may want to talk to your owner closer to your arrival dates to see if they will turn the heater on the night before you arrive. We always take a thermometer with us, so we can monitor the pool temperature. Most pools have a thermometer inside the skimmer basket, but accuracy can be questionable.

We swim in our pool most days until mid- December without having use the heater. Temperature may be 80 first thing in the morning but heat up to 82 or higher if temp is above 80. Usually it is not the water temperature but the feel of the air/wind that makes it uncomfortable.

As cey said, there are a lot of variables in this question. Including your families choice of what is a comfortable temperature. I have to admit, our setting is a bit on the warm side which means swimming in the late fall/winter requires some pool heat. Our pool heater will increase the temperature about a degree per hour. Depending on exactly when the owner flips the switch and when you arrive it is hard to tell if you will be happy with the pool temperature that first day. But I would guess that the second day will be fine.

Have a pool in Orlando over 30 yrs. for me it would be too cold to swim. A day before is too late and it needs a cover.
