Pool filter question

I have a 24ft above ground pool, and have never traveled in the summer for any length of time so I'm not sure what to do about the filter. Do you think it will be ok to not run the filter for 12 days? I will have cleaned it and added all the chemicals before we go and will put the cover on also. Has anyone else ever went on vacation and not run their filter? Thanks for any help. :wave2:

Yes, I have an inground but I would assume they are basically the same. My pool was dirty and had to be shocked again, but was okay to swim in within 48 hours

Hi, we were gone for 10 days last August & have a large inground pool. We didn't run the filter. When we returned our pool looked like a swamp. It took about a week before it recovered, but I don't really think it is a good idea to run the filter when you will be gone for an extended amount of time. If we vacationed in the summer again, we would do the same thing.

Have a great trip!

As long as the chems are in the pool it will be fine,, All a filter is really 4 is to remove dirt and stir the water to help the chems. Putting the cover on will help keep the dirt out, When you return, run the filter for a 24 hour or so cycle and check/ajust your chems with test kit and everything should be just fine.

I usually have me neighbor come over every other day and just plug it in for a few hours. You could also put it on a timer??

If it's really hot or rains a lot while you're gone it could get ugly.

Why don't you put your filter on a pool timer. My IGP is permanently on timers. the easiest thing in the world.

I would also say timer. I have an automatic clorinator on mine. I only have to add chlorine every 3-weeks in tablet form. It saves me from a lot of maintenance issues. I have a 38X20 inground that goes down 14 feet in the deep end. I vac once every 2 weeks and keep the filter on timer from 8-4 every day. I went to WDW 7 days then cruise 7 days and when I returned home the pool was still pristine. I did algecide that night but I didnt see anything and it tested fine.

I do almost no maintenance and friends say it looks like I spend hours. :rotfl:

We have an inground also and have it on a timer. We use it everyday, including while on vacation. We shock it well before we go and and it always looks great when we get back.
Very easy, we never have to think about it.

It's not a great idea to run the filter when nobody is home. If the water drops below the skimmer line while you are gone, you will burn your motor up.

We have our pool on a timer, also, but we don't feel comfortable running the pump with nobody here to check on it. If you have someone that can come regularly and check your pool (neighbor/pool service) that would be the best.

JMHO.
