I have a small ( 9 x 5 ft) pond in my yard. This is the 6th summer for my pond.

I have goldfish and rosy red minnows in it.

A week or so ago one of my older (original 6 year old) goldfish had this white area on it's "nose" just above it's mouth. It died.

Now I notice several other of my goldfish are starting with this same spot.

Does anybody know what this is and can it be treated before I lose all of my goldfish in the pond?

Not a really good picture but it was raining and the fish didn't want to co-operate ;)

Sounds like "Ick". If it is, it can be treated but you need to start raw. Pet stores sell the treatment. It's a liquid. You would have to use more of it (I'm sure the directions are on the bottle) for the pond but you can treat them. After you finish treatment drain the water and start all over with fresh water and clean filters.

Sounds more like mouth fungus(mouth rot) to me. I would treat it ASAP. Here are some links.

I would probably use a fungicide to treat this. Your local pet or pond shop should be able to help you.

This is the medication that I use in my koi/goldfish/shubunkin pond. http://www.tetra-fish.com/catalog/product.aspx?id=133 It works very well. It treats for both fungal and bacterial infections. I use it when they are showing any signs of disease(always Ick), and whenever I change any significant amount of water in their happy home(as a prevention, because that is usually when they get Ick). I can buy it locally at Petsmart, but it is a fairly common med. Make sure that you calculate the number of gallons in your pond, you don't want to under or over medicate.

Here is another link for a great site to buy products. I have ordered from them many times. Their store, which is HUGE, is located near Lancaster, PA. I love to visit it!!!!! http://www.thatpetplace.com/

Thanks for the links.

I was looking in some pond books that I have and I think you might be right.

I will go today and see what I can find to treat it with.

I appreciate your help :sunny:

Just wondering how your fish are doing?????

So far, so good.

I have not lost any more of them yet.

I went to the pond supply store and she gave me some stuff to put in.

I don't know off hand what it is called but it is some natural stuff not chemical, I believe.

She said to put some in once a week for three weeks to see if that helps.

Thanks for your help and for checking up on my fish :sunny:
