Ponchos

We were told adult ponchos are $10 and child sized are $8. Although on our trip the beginning of the month we were charged $25 for 1 adult and 2 child ponchos.

We bought a bunch of cheapo $1 ponchos at Target or Walmart a few years back for a trip to Disney during rainy season. But we never wore them, we were already hot enough as it was without sweating under a plastic poncho, so we ended up buying umbrellas in the park ($10-$12) and gave the ponchos away.

On the Disney Store website, they're $8.45 for adults, and $7.51 for kids.

Expensive in my opinion when you can get them at the dollar stores for a $1...

I've heard those dollar store ones are like wearing plastic wrap. I'd rather spend a little more on something that's better quality and can be used more than once.

We do use the dollar store ones-we buy one for every day and throw them out at the end of the day, easy to do when they're only a buck. I haven't found that the Disney ones are so great. They rip at the neck and at the snaps and are just as sweat-inducing as the cheapie ones.

I completely agree with this.

The material the dollar store ones are made with is so flimsy and clingy it's just not worth using, IMHO, even if you plan to discard it after use.

I actually have a DriDucks one (made by Frog Toggs) that has its own case and has lasted me about 3 years, maybe 20 uses. Since I spent about $12 on it, that's pretty good.

I still have, and still use, Disney ponchos I purchased over a decade ago. They are a nice weight of plastic and can last and last.

You could also bring trash bags with holes cut in them.

But I have certainly gotten good value with the Disney ones I have.

OMG NEVER I repeat NEVER think a dollar store poncho can help in any way with the rains in Florida...its dosnt rain there it monsoons! those dollar shop ponchos blow up at the back and front and the hoods dont stay up..we were wetter with them on than off. Spend a little bit of cash and buy a decent one or spring for a Disney poncho...you wont be sorry.

The dollar store ones are thin and cheap but I don't buy them to wear long term. I purchase a bunch and we wear them when it rains and toss if/when rain is done. No wet Pancho to carry and dry off! Then we just get a new dry one when we head out again. Works for us but some might like something more sturdier. Also if lost, ripped, etc not a financial loss to make us sad.

The dollar store only gets them seasonally, or at least my local ones do. I wound up buying a $3 one at Walmart. I watched a woman's Disney poncho split up the front withing five minutes of her putting it on.

I should clarify as well that Disney ones have latex in them( double check as I was told this 5 years ago) and that is the the reason I buy a bunch of cheap dollar store ones. My daughter has a latex allergy and I can get latex free ones at the dollar store

We generally buy the Coleman versions which don't seem too clingy. We carry these with us at all times in our backpack. (My wife is buying a second set today since we leave Saturday.) Those are for the summer rains. We also have heavier raincoats that we carry when the forecast for heavier rains. I just tested mine the past three days at a BBQ contest with heavy rains. I'm confident it will work in Florida.

We have some "nicer" ponchos we use for football games, etc. They're thicker and nicer than the $1 store (or Target $1 spot) ponchos, but they're also bulkier to carry. (Easily take up 3x the space.) And I feel like I have to be careful with them - dry them completely, fold properly, etc. They're nice to have, but for us, the $1 (or up to $2.50 in the camping section) are a win. My husband and son wore them when they rode Kali 4 times back-to-back. The ponchos did a decent job keeping them dry and we just tossed them when they were done.

There was another post awhile ago about this and there was a link direct to Ikea. We went and pick some up, they worked great, fold up nice into there own pocket take up no space and dry quick.
They were under $10 and sturdy enough to reuse and reuse.
Try them out

I bought a Disney one this year at POFQ gift shop and I'm pretty sure it was less than $10. It worked well and I plan to take it back with me next year in case I need it (still figuring out how to carry it since I prefer a small bag; will probably figure out how to clip it to my bag).

I am stupid and clumsy and I'm sure most people could have made this work, but... I got caught in a monsoon at AK this year. I had a cheapo Coleman "emergency" poncho from Target with me. There was no place nearby at AK to get under cover; I tried to put on my poncho (I was already soaked) and could not for the life of me figure out top from bottom or how I was supposed to get it on; I gave up and wrapped it around my (already soaked) bag and just got out of there as fast as I could. (I'm sure if I'd been with someone else, we could have helped each other with the cheap ponchos, but they're just not worth it to me.)

The last time I bought a poncho at Disney was probably when they had the yellow ones back in the '90s. We took them home and used them often because they held up well. I think they are clear now?

I don't know what these people are talking about - I love the dollar store ponchos ( I actually buy mine at target for 0.88 - they are called emergency ponchos). They DO protect you from rain. Of course, they aren't going to keep you out and riding stuff outside, but they keep you sheltered enough to get to a restaurant or other place to hide out till the rain passes. They work just fine for this disney veteran. I would NEVER spend 20 bucks on a poncho - may as well burn money. I also vote for umbrellas - you can throw a 10 dollar umbrella in a park bag easily and carry that around. I personally stick with my dollar ponchos- worth so much to be able to throw them away when you're done. I hate sticking those things back in their cases when you're done with them!
