Polynesian vs. Beach Club

Thinking about a trip in September and trying to decide between Polynesian and Beach Club. We've never stayed at either. Family of five - kids ages at the time of the trip will be 8,7, and 5.
MK will be the park we go to the most, so I love the idea of being on the monorail. But storm-along bay as well as the restaurants at Beach Club look fantastic too.
The price difference on the quotes I got made either one do-able for us. But obviously Beach Club is less money. I think the Polynesian looks amazing, but I think if it wasn't for the monorail I would choose Beach Club.
How big of a difference do you think staying on the monorail makes?
Can anyone throw out some pros or cons on each that might help sway my decision?

If Magic Kingdom is your primary park, I would stay at Polynesian. You can grab a boat or monorail to the MK from Polynesian. You can also watch the MK fireworks from the resort (and depending on what room you have, you potentially could watch them from your room). While the pool is not as spectacular as Beach Club, the pool at Polynesian is good too. Another nice thing is that you can walk to the Ticket Transit Center from Polynesian and grab the monorail directly to Epcot; though if you didn't want to do the walk you could ride the monorail and switch at the TTC, or just catch a bus from Poly directly to Epcot - but we found walking to the TTC and getting on the monorail got us to Epcot the quickest. Now if Epcot and Hollywood Studios were your main parks, I would change my recommendation.

We were deciding between the same two. We went with POLY because the monorail and having a quick escape from the September heat won out. The pool is great at BC, but we figured we'd use the monorail to MK and EP a lot and the fireworks from our resort more. Also the pool is still awesome at POLY- and there's a new quiet pool too.

We've always stayed at MK resorts (GF and CR) and it is nice to be able to get to MK directly and easily. We are trying BC for the first time because our family likes to spend a lot of time at EP and HS. So if you'll be heading over to MK mostly, do the Poly. I've never loved the feel of the resort, myself, but I am in the minority--it's always felt too busy for me with all the people coming and going to 'Ohana, the Ceremonial dinner, Trader Sams, etc, but it is lovely and the pool there looks good, too. If you'll be going to MK a lot, you'd have to take a bus from BC and that might preclude afternoon rests, etc. That's what I loved about the GF--hopping back to the resort for an afternoon swim or nap, then going back.

I can tell you that one trip we did a split stay between the 2--started off at the Poly and moved to the Beach Club. And we all wished we had remained at the Poly. Being on the monorail line is awesome! As is kicking back at the pool at night, and watching Wishes at the same time.

How strong are your kids as swimmers? Keeping an eye on 3 at SAB can be a challenge.

I agree with the poster who mentioned since MK is your primary park, I'd go with Poly. When our kids were younger, we did highly prefer staying at BC as we loved walking into Epcot each night and we also loved the sandy-bottom pool. However, as our kids got older and it seems weird but now we're at the MK a lot more, so Poly has quietly become a favorite. Really, nothing beats being able to zip back and forth to your favorite park.

I love both, but if Stormalong Bay is a main factor for Beach Club for you, we have found that so many people stay at YC/BC just for the pool so we find it to always be busy. Because its so large, busy, and at times chaotic, it's not as relaxing and fun as some of the other pools IMO. If your kids love the pools, Poly has a pretty awesome one and you could even add a day at a water park for a fairly reasonable price too.

last sept I was in the state of indecision and we ended up doing a split stay with 4 nights at each, first beach club and the poly. We did EPCOT and DHS on our Beach club days and MK and AK on our POly days. It was the best of both worlds.... that being said we definitely preferred Poly as a family, and this year we are going there for the whole week (and upgrading to club level, that place won us over big time). Walking to epcot and DHS is incredible though, so if you spend a lot of time in those parks, it's definitely a contender.

My family stayed at the Poly 4 years ago and we loved the easy access to MK and the walk to Ticket & Transportation Center to hop on the monorail to Epcot. It was great viewing the fireworks from the resort especially since our youngest was 3 at the time. I loved the zero entry pool and so did the kids. It was perfect for their ages at the time: 7, 5, & 3. Definitely worth staying there. This summer we are actually staying at Yacht Club. (We have always wanted to stay at Beach Club or Yacht Club, but wasn't the best choice while the kids were still little.) They still are young, but are at an age where they can handle the bus rides to MK. The three will really enjoy the pool and I think old enough where my husband & I can handle keeping an eye on all three at the same time in the water.

As other have said, when MK is the priority, it's easiest to stay at an MK resort. If Epcot is a priority, Beach Club is the way to go. If it's an even split - I don't think you could go wrong with either (we've never stayed at either resort, but know people who have and they are definitely on our list for future stays at some point).

Thanks everyone for your great input. Looks like Polynesian is winning the battle. I have always wanted to stay at a monorail hotel. I'm thinking maybe I should save Beach Club for our next trip a few years down the line when they are all better swimmers.

I would choose the Poly, if it were me. The Poly has larger rooms which all have a daybed that it comfortable to sleep upon. The BC has many rooms that only have two queens. With a family of five you would have priority on getting one of the BC rooms with a daybed, but it doesn't always work out that way. The BC will give you a rollaway, but that makes a somewhat small room even more cramped.

Also, if the MK is the park you will visit the most, then staying in a monorail resort is definitely the most convenient place to stay. Getting around in a huge place like WDW takes valuable time, so whatever adds to the convenience is a huge plus, IMO. Others have already mentioned this, but it is a very important point.

The grounds at the Poly are beautiful and part of what is really an incredible theme that has a very wide appeal. It is so relaxing. You feel pampered, but in a comfortable way that just feels right somehow. You feel at home and completely carefree. It is very special. The BC is also beautiful, but other than a walkway around the lake to the other resorts in the Epcot area, the grounds seem to be mostly enclosed as a part of the swimming complex. That is fine and we enjoy the activities at the BWI in the evenings when we stay at the BC, but the atmosphere is less 'earthy" and more cultivated. It makes a
difference when the grounds with lush foliage are all around you, like they are at the Poly. the torches lit at night are very romantic and watching Wishes and the Castle change colours across the lake is magical.

Storm Along Bay is great, but many people find it crowded and difficult to keep track of children there because there are so many twists and turns. Also, you have to leave the swimming area and cross the walkway to climb stairs to use the slide. The Poly pools are recently redone and are very nice - you can even watch Wishes from the main pool area.

If you like the look of Cape May Cafe, you can still dine there while staying at the Poly, but we feel that there are more and better dining options at the Poly itself than at the BC itself. If you go beyond the Poly or the BC to surrounding resorts you still have a better selection at the Poly, IMO - you have all the great restaurants at the GF (walk or monorail) and at CR(monorail). Now, to be fair, you do have World Showcase nearby for the BC, but only a few countries (UK, Canada, France) are really close by. The others are closer to the BC than any other resort, but they are still far enough away to not be 'convenience' dining, IMO.

Personally, I think staying at a monorail resort makes a huge difference. That is why we always stay in this area for at least part of every trip to WDW and continue to pay the insane prices to do so. YMMV, however.

Good luck choosing! Having stayed at both resorts many times in almost all categories of rooms, I feel confident in suggesting that whichever you choose, you will have a fantastic time! Enjoy!

I see that you made your decision while I was typing! LOL!

Good choice! Enjoy!

Agree with PPs (Poly - way easier to keep track of kids your kids' ages, and far better for MK) - just wanted to add: (1) its an easy walk to TTC from Poly, so nice and simple to take the monorail to Epcot (only bus or taxi to AK and HS, assuming you don't want to walk from Epcot to HS); (2) even if you aren't huge QS people, sometimes its very handy to have Captain Cooks, and the food is great (not just cheeseburgers like at the QS at SAB) and interesting. They even have Tonga Toast at breakfast. And, there's nothing like watching Wishes and the water light parade in your PJs and then walk to your room to put the kids to bed. Its really so much more relaxing for the parents than BC/YC (but it is nice to walk to 2 parks!). HTH! Oh - I definitely vote for Poly for you.

I think the Poly is a great choice! We've stayed at both and while the BC is nice, the Poly will always be our choice between the two. SAB was nice and I'm glad we got to try it, but we weren't wow'd by it as we prefer the Poly pool. As nkereina posted, SAB is large and since it is shared with the YC, it can/does get crowded/chaotic. Plus, for us, it doesn't get any better than seeing the castle every day from the Poly grounds, and being able to see the fireworks while swimming is an added plus, IMO :wizard:.

I agree with Babsy. The BC is nice, but we also feel that the monorail resorts have more to offer in terms of larger rooms, a more relaxed atmosphere, and a better variety of dining options (both CS & TS). We love Cape May and eat there every trip, but other than that, we find more to choose from among the monorail resorts :goodvibes.
