I just got an update on the Polynesian and because of an increase in smoking room requests; part of Tahiti is now smoking. The smoking rooms are located in rooms 1002-1028 which would be the ground level starting on the garden side at the main entrance and going clockwise around to the lagoon side up to the beach access doors. When they emailed me they said that these are additional rooms for smoking added to Tuvalu (upper floor) and Niue. I was surprised to see Niue on the list because it use to be non-smoking so I emailed back to ask if that is correct. My thinking is two things. Either it was a mistake and they meant Samoa (next to Niue) or because Samoa is being renovated they have Niue as smoking temporarily. I will try to find out unless someone else does first.

The other news is the Luau is open and here is a review from one of the staff:

The Disney's Spirit of Aloha dinner show (replaced the Luau) has started and I was able to go and check it out. It's completely different in the beginning, very upbeat and more up to date with the dress and dance and it's more of a theatrical type performance with a story line. The second half of the show they do the dances from the different islands like they used to. The ending is once again, very upbeat and lively. They do the Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride song from Lilo and Stitch and have a dance to it. The food is pretty much the same fare but prepared a little different, (Coconut bread, salad, roasted chicken, ribs, fried rice, saluted fresh vegetables and dessert). I enjoyed it.

Anyone who has seen it I would like to hear a review.

Aloha

Humm, interesting to hear they chose the first floor instead of the third for smoking. Wouldn't you think that it would cause the smoke to flow into the second floor rooms?

That is what I was thinking but maybe they are thinking the people can walk put and away from the building to smoke instead of trapped on the balcony.

Thanks for the update, Steve. I'd like to try the Spirit of Aloha show on our next trip. :)

Isn't Tahiti supposed to be concierge during the Hawaii renovation? I wonder if they will keep the ground floor smoking during that time as well. I might have to rethink my 4th of July plans :(

thanks for the update Steve!!:)

I've read so many posts about people in non smoking being affected by smoking on other floors. Now I'm worried about my request for Tahiti. I have asthma and the slightest hint of smoke closes my lungs.

I was all set and hoping for my first time view of cinderella's castle.

What to do?

Lizzie, we were next to someone at Christmas at the BWI who was smoking on the balcony of their non-smoking room. Needless to say when it was cold she was smoking in the room as well and leaving the door open. We couldn't do anything but keep our door closed and our son off the balcony.

I think with people on the ground floor smoking we won't have a chance. :( Oh Well.

thanks Steve!

I have a question.. are the rooms any different after the renovations? do they have a new decor, or new furnture? what are they doing in the renovations??

Maybe that is why Tahiti is smoking on one floor, because they want to offer concierge guests the option while teh Hawaii longhouse is closed for renovations.

I cant see the problem, I have stayed in smoking rooms on the thrird floor of Hawaii, and also at the YC, and at the GF (and we dont smoke) and I have never smelled smoke at all, or had any kind of problem.
I think most people smoke outside, even most smokers agree that to smoke in the room stinks it up.

The new Luau sounds great! I haven tbeen to the old one since '98, I guess it might be time to try it again! :)

Thanks again!

Laura :)

Here is a correction to my above message. Niue is still a non-smoking longhouse and when Samoa opens back up it will still be smoking. Sorry for the wrong information.

Also with Tahiti the smoking is only on the first floor of the west half of the longhouse so if you were over on the other half you should not be affected at all. There is a big entrance between the two sides of the longhouse.

princess angel,

there is no change to the inside of the new rooms as far as how they look. They just replaces all the materials with new materials. A detail of the renovations is on my web page (page 3).

Do you know yet when Samoa will be finished. I have requested it for our trip June 26

It should be back open by April.

Aloha
