Polynesian rehab update.

I was told today that Aotearoa was done with the rehab but I don’t know if they are booking the rooms yet. Samoa will be next to start reconstruction and that will be in January 2003. I was told another longhouse will start in September but I have not got confirmation on which one but I believe it will be Niue. Hawaii is still scheduled for June 2003. There was a rumor about the rooms being done wider and the amount of rooms being reduced but that is not true if you hear it. This was told to someone by a CM at either the Polynesian or Central Reservations. Either way it is not true.

I'm keeping a list of what is going on with each longhouse, so that when I have my TA fax my room request in right before I leave, I'll have a good idea which to ask for...

We would like a balcony room, non smoking building (if that even really exists!!) and I made notes from your website for each longhouse to narrow down my request..

I can't remember if you mentioned this before, but do you know if the Polynesian is putting in those motion sensors for the A/C in all the longhouses now? Also, do you know when you will know if Niue will be the next to undergo rehab? Are the rehabs taking about a month? 6 weeks? Just trying to get a feel for what will be happening when we go in December. I mean, I know that rehabs have to happen and that they will do the best that they can to camoflauge it, but I just want to know what's going on...if you know.

We just booked the Poly for Oct. 29 - Nov. 7 (part of the CBR ). I was under the impression that the Poly was all re-done by now.

Can anyone tell me how much is done and how much isn't?

Also, how bad are the areas that have not been done yet?

Jeanny,

You should not have a problem with getting a balcony non smoking room. The only longhouses that do not have balconies on their non smoking room are Hawaii (concierge) Tuvalu and Samoa. I am sure it will work out fine.

Someone here posted that the new Aotearoa rooms have the motion sensors and what ever they did to that longhouse is what is happening to the others. The reason I still have to confirm Niue is because in the message I got it said that Fiji was going to start in September. Well I know Fiji had started in June so I think they meant Niue. When I was there I got the impression Niue was next so that makes sense. The rehab takes about 2 months so by December they should be in between doing Niue and Samoa that starts in January. There may be no construction going on when you are there but even so it does not look bad. There are pictures of Aotearoa on my Aotearoa page that were taken during the construction and you can hardly tell. It took me a few days before I even knew Fiji and Aotearoa were being worked on when I was there in July.

I would think they would be done by 2004 but it may go into the beginning of 2004. Just like the last big rehab that started in 1996 and went till 1998 and this time they are doing much more than they ever have before. By then they should be over in Tahiti or Rapa Nui and they may not have to do as much since they were constructed different than the older longhouses. They do not have a schedule for anything past the Hawaii longhouse rehab in June.

P.S. I know this is a little early, since my trip isn't for another year and a half, but can you tell me which longhouse would be the best for me?? I'd like: a balcony and not too too far from GCH or pools (but doesn't have to be "right there"). I haven't decided whether to get lagoon or garden view. Can you recommend a longhouse for each? In a garden view, I don't care what the view would be, except I wouldn't want a view of the parking lot or of TTC. In lagoon view, I don't necessarily need a view of the castle, although that would be nice. We had a view of the castle while at GF, so this time just seeing the lagoon would be fine

The longhouses have had problems with moisture because of 2 things. One is because they are made of wood on the outer structure and since the original longhouse rooms were constructed using the modular rooms and plugged into the buildings (like the Contemporary) there is space under the floors where water is getting trapped. They are taking everything out of the rooms down to the structure and cementing the floors as well as redoing some of the landscaping to keep the water from flowing towards the buildings. They are also replacing much of the wood on the outer surface and stairways of the longhouses.

Inside the rooms they are rewiring and replacing the pluming and ventilation. All the carpets and wallpaper are being replaced as well. I have no idea what the new rooms look like but everything will be new.

I would suggest Tokelau as a good location and nice (larger) rooms that are close to both pools and the beach with the GCH and TTC not very far away. The only longhouse where you will get a true parking lot view would be Rapa Nui on the South East side. Aotearoa would be nice also and the rooms have just been completed. It is a little farther to the pools though. For a lagoon view Tahiti is your best bet.

Tokelau has not been done but I don't know how much they will have to do anyway. The newer longhouses were made different and may not need the work the older ones do. There is no schedule for Tokelau to be done at this time but they don't have a complete schedule yet anyway.

Do you know when Samoa is supposed to be finished? We need smoking, and like the location of Samoa for our June 2003 trip. Also, if I wait until codes for Summer come out, do you think we'll be able to get a room for one night before a cruise? Or do you think I'd better go ahead and reserve now and change if a better deal comes along?

Samoa will start in January and each longhouse has been taking about 2-3 months.
