Polynesian for the disabled

I have been working on a web page for the Polynesian and I wanted to add some info to help those looking for information about rooms at the resort as well as what else they offer to help those with disabilities. I have a few pages that have info about wheelchairs and rooms with roll-in showers as well as pictures and room numbers. I also have some information about the new wheelchair friendly pool at the Polynesian. I do not have a disability so I may not completely understand what information you may be looking for but I hope this helps some of you who are looking into staying at the Polynesian.

Thank you for the information. We were not aware of the wheelchair accessibilty to the new pool. The information is very helpful. Unfortunately, we made reservations at the PO French Quarter before we learned about the accessible pool at the Polynesian.

We appreciate that Disney is trying to make changes that will accomodate wheelchair uses. Given the aging babyboomer population and the slowly increasing accessibility to travel for wheelchair uses, it also makes good business sense for Disney to address accessiblity. I'll bet there are a lot of folks like us who would consider membership in the Disney Vacation Club if we knew that accessibility would not be a concern.

This probably isn't what you're looking for but I'll type it and let you decide....

when I was at WDW in Feb, I ended up in Celebration's hospital for an emergency gall bladder surgery. The day they released me, we were switching resorts and DH went and checked us in at the Poly before he came and got me. Everything went smoothly! They were soooo nice about what I had been thru. They offered me a wheelchair and I accepted it. (I accepted everything easily since I was taking hydrocodone! LOL) Anyway, after rolling to our room in Tuvalu, I was in soo much pain that I had to take another pill. We rolled around the grounds for maybe 30 minutes and I had to take the chair back to the desk because I was in so much pain. The stone paths that are at the Poly are terrible for people that are in pain and using a wheelchair. They are uneven stones which are beautiful to look at and fine to walk on, but being wheeled over them is a nightmare. It's like being in your car hitting every pothole on the worst road in America.

Don't get me wrong.....I LOVE the Poly and would stay there in a heartbeat! To me, no other resort can shut out the rest of the world like the Poly can. (well, exept maybe the pool at DxL, or whatever name it is going by now ) I just don't think the paths are very wheelchair friendly.

This is not answering the original question, just adding another. We will be staying at the Polynesian for the first time this fall. We would like to take advantage of relaxing on the Beach - feel like we are really in the South Seas. Also the electric water parade and the fireworks can be seen from there I hear. My teenage son uses a manual wheelchair and we wondered if they had any beach chairs available for that area like they do at some public beaches here on the east coast. We may be able to carry him to a swing (he does not sit independently) and then go back and get his chair - but one of those beach chairs would sure make things easier! Anyone know about this? Thank you so much.

They have a "water wheelchair" at the new pool at the Polynesian, but it is not the kind with the big yellow wheels like they have at beaches. It is for pushing someone into their pool down the gradual slope at one end. I'd be surprised if it worked in the sand.

Are you asking about a beach chair to be used for transportation or just to sit in to watch the fireworks, etc? I've not seen the beach type wheelchair, but they definitely do have lots of lounge chairs available around the beach area. Same type as around the pools. I bet there are pictures on Tikiman's great site.
