Polynesian DVC Resort can soon be booked by general public

Wow! $2100-2900 a night? That is insane!
If I had the means for that, I would have the means to go to the real Bora Bora, and then why would I even bother with Poly?

Yep, I just checked. I could stay a week at a over water bungalow at the Four Seasons in Bora Bora for a little less than a third of the cost at the new Poly bungalows. Crazy.

That being said, the real Bora Bora does not have Disney, and so we will continue to plan our vacations to be with the mouse :)

Note you're referring to the bungalows exclusively...not the 360 other DVC rooms at the Polynesian.

This really isn't much different than suites at WDW resorts. How many people can afford $2-3k per night for a Grand Floridian or Contemporary suite? Every single Walt Disney World hotel room is overpriced in comparison to some non-theme park destination. You're paying a premium for the location, design, amenities, brand name and other features. Absolutely no mystery there.

Have to agree with Tim above. I think the cash prices for the bungalows are right in line with other suites at WDW. I'm not shocked in anyway by this pricing.

For us "commoners" it is hard to fathom having that kind of money to spend on a room, but their are many people out there that can afford this type of room and I believe they will be popular and will sell out regularly.

Nowadays you're paying for brand name only. I'd say rest of the 'benefits' have fallen well below the price justification.

Man, I never even considered a trip to Bora Bora, but after all these posts about it, I'm gonna have to go! Is it nice there? ;-)

I'd say you're paying for the location above all else. Look at any other comparable theme park resort area. Even on the low end, it's not uncommon to pay $150-200 per night for a room on par with a rural $50 Motel 6.

And a Motel 6 is about what you're getting for that $150-200 bucks a night. It's more difficult to push location as the principle factor - nowadays practically the only factor - when rooms outside the park offer much better accommodations at a more realistic cost. In times past the location factor was a plus in addition to the quality of the rooms - you felt you were getting something for the higher price you paid. Gradually the quality has dropped while the price has gone through the roof.

As a side note, less than two hundred feet away in the same resort one can book a theme park view at a maximum rack rate of half the cost - and you're not sitting on top of the swamp in a room that looks like an IKEA sidewalk sale. Regardless, as vanity dictates there will be many that will fork over the cash (or points) to see and be seen.

I agree with some of these sentences or parts
Thereof... Not so much with others...

Can you guess which ones?

We stayed at Lowes' Portofino at Uni in a room with a huge balcony overlooking the bay in December, for $285 a night. It was as nice as any room at WDW, and any place with a balcony that big at Disney, if you could find one that large, would have cost 3 times that amount.

There is no doubt...as every comment I've seen about the comparison is as you say it.

But the question becomes how much is the label worth?
Will people pay as Disney continues to push their prices to the edge and...in some cases...over it.
