I'm a potential new member and they have given me availability for a vacation that we have planned in July. It's just me and my 7 year old daughter.

They've said they can give us a room at the Riviera on short notice using my points and it's a good rate. Alternatively, I've already booked the Poly independently and paying cash.

Is the Poly a big enough reason to forego using my newly acquired points (and getting all of my money back for the existing res) or will my child have an amazing time at the Riviera? I've never stayed at Poly but we really wanted to.

(Side note, my home resort is VGF and I am probably going to buy a second add on contract at Poly - so we could potentially stay there next year).

Just me, but I would use my points and get my cash back. Your daughter might love the Skyliner. Many children think of it as another ride. Rooms at Riviera are gorgeous.

Save Poly for another time. The villas are usually fairly easy to book with points at 7 months.

Thank you. This was kind of my thought. We have many years to book Poly. That $4k I'll get back from that reservation pays for a good chunk of the DVC membership!

Try out your new points!
Saving that cash will help with the new DVC purchase.

Poly rooms with cash are so painful right now, just had some non-member family book them for our Christmas trip for themselves...yikes! I'd definitely stay on points at Riv, and Poly is far and away my favorite Disney resort.

Yeah it is painful. When I put it in perspective, saving that money will pay for 10% of my new 200 point contract with VGF.

Definitely chose RIV. One fun thing to do is to take the Skyliner to each of the other resorts on the line to get a "snack" from each! One night, we, as adults, just rode it to Epcot and back just for fun..it was so cool seeing everything in the dark!!!

We’ve stayed at both on points and I prefer the Riviera by far. I don’t think I will ever stay at Poly again in its current state. Pool is too crowded and shallow and I prefer 1brs to studios.

100% Riviera. Not wasting money, Skyliner is fine (my kids do feel like it's a ride), and it's a great way to explore those 2 resorts (HS/Epcot) and some other resorts. I also like the newness of Riv, even though I am dying to check out the updated rooms at Poly.

We use our Riviera points for Riviera, only. My kids love the Skyliner and yes, they treat it like another ride. The grounds, in the back, are really fun and we recently discovered Sebastian's bistro at CBR - it's like walking to another land there!

Skyliner is so much better than the monorail.
That is one opinion.

OTOH there are those of us, (BLT people) that are weirdly obsessed with the monorail, and think it is the best thing at WDW. ;)

That being said, I would always use points before cash, even if it meant I had to stay at Riviera. (Because it is a perfectly good resort even if it's not near the monorail, or MK, or DS). :p
