My first WDW trip I stayed at the Poly (couple yrs. ago). Last month stayed at the All-Star Movies with a big group. I vowed never to stay at Poly again. The huge price difference doesn't justify the difference in quality, and AS Movies was pretty good, especially with the Disney theming. What's all the fuss about the Disney Luxury Resorts. Am I missing something?

I think its more of a "hotel" vs. "motel" issue. The Deluxe resorts have interior corridors, central air versus a through-the-wall or window a/c unit, nicer furnishings, and generaly nicer grounds. The Deluxe resorts also have more activities for guests. Many are also closer to one of the parks.

The Polynesian is multiples of what it costs to stay at the All Stars. But my wife would rather not go to Disney than to stay at the All Stars ever again. (Too loud, room too small, very crowded pool that was not great with little kids, no table service restaurant, not to mention someone got into our room while we were at WL for dinner and used the bathroom facilities and did not flush!)

To each his own! (I like the new E-Class, but I drive a Honda). Have a great time wherever you stay!

Dont know if I have a good answer, but youve picked my 2 favorite resorts. If money were no object, I would go for the Poly everytime! But, since Im not rich, thats not always possible, or I would be taking a lot less trips. ;)
To me the Poly is worth it for a night here or there. I agree with the "thats a lot of money to sleep and shower" theory. But when we stay there we usually eat at the Kona Cafe, spend that day at the MK, with some time at the pool/beach. That is worth it to me because we get easy transportation, the restaurant is convenient(and my fvorite!), and we do take advantage of the amenities there. Therefore I feel Im getting my moneys worth. However I am just as happy staying at ASMO. Yes, I miss out on a few things, but the savings makes it worth it. Plus like I said, we really enjoy ASMO, and my kids love the theming.
I guess the bottom line is I can justify the cost of the Poly occasionaly because I do love it so much(and we usually get a decent code rate), but I couldnt justify paying rack rate and for more than a few days at a time.

I think it is personal preference. We have never stayed at All Star and although it looks fine it wouldn't be my style(not to say I wouldn't stay there if I had to). One big problem we have is that we are a family of 5 so we would need 2 rooms. I would prefer to spend the extra money and stay at the Poly vs getting 2 rooms at the Allstar. I would never pay rack rate for the Poly though. We stayed last year with a great discount in a lagoonview room for 209/nt. This was worth the money. The convenience of the monorail, sit down restaraunts and watching the fireworks from the patio of our room make it worth it for us. We have also stayed at CBR and really enjoyed this resort. I think the CM's are jsut as friendly and helpful no matter which resort you are at.

stevets...I would have to agree with wdwnutze, I think it's absolutely personal preference. I have only stayed at the All Star Movies, however we did go around to look at other resorts and I would have to say they aren't for myself or my family. We really like the themeing of the ASMo, plus the food court is excellent. On our trip there was myself, my mother, my daughter (13.5) and my son (11.5) and the room was plenty big for all of us. We plan to always stay there on future trips.
