Poly Run Down?

A friend of ours just returned from a week long trip to WDW and on three separate occassions on the monorail, heard guests talking about how disappointed they were with the Poly. Said it was a bit run down looking. I was under the impression that it had been refurbished recently. We never stayed at the Poly but have eaten at O'Hana's several times as well as walked around by the pool at nite to see the Electrical Water Parade and thought that the grounds were beautifully kept. Any comments? We have family that have booked there for April 08 and would like to give them a heads up. Thanks in advance!

I stayed at the Poly three weeks ago and it certainly was not run down. The resort is gorgeous and has a huge base of fans who return year after year. I intend to return next year and would not do so if the resort was run down.

No way. The Poly is fantastic. I just returned from my second stay there a couple of weeks ago and it is lovely and well kept. It is an old resort, so occasionally there may be issues...we had a few small ones. The grounds are really pretty though, not run down a bit.

Absolutely not! Even though the Polynesian was built in the 70's, it certainly is not run down! I actually think it is in better shape than WL! :)

We were there week before last and were pleased with our stay. Our room was in great shape, and well appointed. The grounds were beautiful and well kept. There were a few hints that this is an older resort, such as sinks with no water pressure at all in the ladies room across from Ohana, and some kind of major repair going on on the 1st floor of our building (Rapa Nui). Overall, however, there wasn't any feeling that the Poly was run down. We'd love to stay there again.

Not even close. We visited there in May and will be back in 28 days. The Poly is more beautiful then ever.

Even though my parents and I have not stayed at the Polynesian, we always visit it while in WDW and when we were there this past August it did not look run down. Besides they also just renovated the rooms there, so it makes the suggestion of it being run down a bit hard to understand. However if someone does feel it was not that good, it is their opinion and they are allowed to express it.

On the contrary, I would say that the resort looks better right now than it has in years- so much fresh vibrant paint, refurbed rooms, trimmed and cared for landscaping, etc.

I remember reading one recent review saying that the carpet in one of the buildings looked like it needed to be cleaned (sorry I don't remember which one) but we stayed in Tokelau for 8 nights last month and everything was gorgeous, in fact they were painting around the resort while we were there.

I don't know what their idea of run down is but I'm pretty spoiled AND picky LOL when it comes to hotels LOL and we thought Poly was gorgeous. Hope that helps!

People really need to follow-up with a source which provides negative feedback with no substance.

On the other hand, people are impacted by colors and are not even aware of it. The PR is defined by many shades of BROWN. While it is a earth color associated with home, organic, substance and stability (other descriptives exist) which would be considered a positive response, there are other responses not so favorable. For some the color BROWN is related to "dirty"...one of the reasons it is rarely used in fashion advertising. Combine this to an individual who also does not care for the theme and you might hear someone say the PR is run down.

This is pretty much exactly what I was gonna say! :)

I was there in early September, and everything was just gorgeous - better than it was the last time I was there in 93. I don't know how anyone could walk around the resort and not think it's beautiful... to each his own, I suppose, but it is absolutely not run down. I can't wait to go back!

We were there there last Oct. and it was in beautiful condition. I have no idea what they might have been referring to.

I have stayed at the Poly a few times in the last two years, and it is definately not run down. As a previous poster stated some might associate the color brown with being "dirty", and if that is a persons perception, then you would definately think the Poly is dirty and unkept. When I was there they were doing alot of paiting here and there on the outsides of the building and replacing some older wood and painting it brown. For me, the Poly definately looks like some of the most beautiful resorts in Hawaii, the more colorful and festive decor would be more Carribean themed.

Yes, it is most definitely run down and I wouldn't recommend visiting. Especially around the 2nd week of every September.

Was that too obvious? ;)

The last week in August it always looks REALLY run down so I wouldn't recommend anyone visiting then either. ;-)

Seriously, when I did visit in August in no way did the property look 'run down'. The kids are pretty vocal about what they like and don't like so if it looked like a dump I would have heard something. :lmao: The landscaping was gorgeous and the renovations look wonderful. Now to some the resort might look 'dated' because of all the dark woods but that's a matter of perspective.

On visits to the Poly and Grand Floridian, I've noticed the only "run-down" sections appear to be the monorail stations. Faded, chipped paint, cobwebs, etc. For the amount of money they charge per night, I'd think every aspect of those resorts would be as close to perfect as imaginable.

I believe there has been a rehab recently of the monorail area at the Polynesian.

When I was there in April of this year they had started work on the renovation of the monorail platform. There was some work still going on in August but nothing around the immediate monorail platform area looked run-down at all. If anything, it looked 'fresher' than it was in April.

I just returned from my first stay at the Poly 5 days ago. I had just previously completed two weeks in hotels for work from Hilton, Hyatt, and Renaissance. I enjoyed the Poly more than any of the other hotels I stayed in - including a 1 week concierge stay at a Renaissance Hotel. The room was well kept, grounds were amazing, service was impeccable, and would not hesitate to stay there in a heartbeat!

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, The Polynesian is entitled to my high-flying endorsement!

It wasn't as well-kept as I would have expected. The common areas were nice, but we had problems with water pressure in our building and never had really hot water. We had 3 rooms in our party and each room had at least one light fixture that didn't work (we notified the front desk, but it wasn't worth the effort of moving to new rooms). The lock to our patio door didn't really work unless you jimmied it just right and shoved it as hard as you possibly could. It wasn't awful or anything, but there were definitely things I noticed. We were in Fiji.
