OK ... One last bump before we leave for WDW tonight ... What's a "cant miss" at the Poly so that when we visit the resort we "get" why so many people rave about this resort.

I have been to Hawaii and have visited the poly but have never stayed there so maybe that would be different but I found it too much like a fake "Hawaii". A little overboard for me.

What at disneyworld is not fake? Is cinderellas castle a real castle? I am confused.

I think I may be too late for the OP, but just found this thread.

We have only been to Hawaii once, but we stayed at the POLY that same summer.

I thought it felt authentic, but we experienced Hawaii a little differently than some. We stayed with family who were living there at the time. So we did not stay in a resort or fancy hotel, so can't really compare that.

We did visit the Polynesian Cultural Center, which was very similar in style to the Polynesian Resort. But I don't know how authentic the cultural center is, though.

I do know a WDW fan who was born and raised in Hawaii, with family still there. She said the Poly felt authentic to her, and it is her favorite WDW resort.

I've been to 5 islands in Hawaii, but it was in 1990. I've stayed at the Poly 4 times now as well. My opinion is that the Poly does a good job of recreating the tropical feel but you aren't on the ocean and can not recreate that air and breeze. As for decor, there is such varied decor on the islands that you can't really pinpoint the feel so given that, the Poly would fit in just fine if it was plunked down on a beach on one of the islands!

.

I hear what you are saying but what I mean is that it feels "plastic" to me. Thats only way I can describe it. I guess another way would be to say cinderellas castle looks more like a real castle than the poly looks like hawaii:)

Agree with OP who reference the PR doing a good job of providing a tropical feel. We have been to Hawaii frequently and would hesitate to say it makes me think were in Hawaii, but it is a good theme. You pay more for lodging at Disney and get less. We also find dining better at Hawaii resort then at the PR, while also only making dining reservations the night before at the same day with few exceptions (luaus, Mamas Fish House, etc)
