Polish leader dies in plane crash

Poland is in mourning.

Poland's President Lech Kaczynski and scores of others are killed as their plane crashes in Russia after hitting trees in foggy weather.

People are suspicious about the nature of the accident. So many important officials were on that plane. On top of this, the crash may strain relations with Russia, which as already tenuous.

It's already started. I just read something about it on Facebook where they were hinting that the pilot crashed the plane on purpose. It's sad on my levels.

The irony here Rich, is that the president and most of his top level administrators were flying to Russia to commemorate the murders of hundreds of Polish officers by Stalin following WWII.

The President in Poland doesn't hold much power within the state. He can (but usually doesn't) elect the Prime Minister. It is the Prime Minister that holds most of the internal power within Poland. The President is in charge of the military (which lost almost all of their 'leaders' in the crash) and is the official 'head' of the state for all International affairs. The day to day workings within Poland shouldn't be effected too much with this.

Bronisław Komorowski is acting as President right now and there will be elections soon.

Does anyone find it at least intriguing that;
1. They were on their way to Russia to commemorate the anniversary of the murder of 88,000 Polish officers at the hands of the USSR.
2. That Putin was a KGB officer when Solidarity helped to bring down the Soviet Union?
3. That many of those on board were members of Solidarity at the fall of the USSR?
4. That the pilot didn't abort the flight after three attempts and apparently was coming in low on a single light?

I don't know about flying, but I know that typically one person near the top of the list of "to become president" is excluded from group meetings. I think its usually the head of the department of ag but I could be wrong.

Such a tragedy.

I can't believe they had so many high levels on one plane and was curious of how our delegation would travel to such an event as well.

As for the pilot--I find it odd that they ignored Air Traffic Controllers to land elsewhere due to the weather.

Funny thing is, the Polish people weren't fans of their Government. However, as soon as they sadly passed on, they went into a state of mourning.
