To all of you who have been entering the Lottery to win tickets for the Polar Express ride in North Conway, consider yourselves lucky (and richer!) that you never won!
We went for our "magical" ride to the North Pole on the Polar Express. There was NO magic! No music for singing Christmas songs. No one walking up and down the isles talking to little kids in there pj's about visiting santa. The story says the riders drank "Hot chocolate that tasted like melted chocolate bars". That's a good one! We were all given a small styrofoam cup filled with (less than half!) watered down SwissMiss cocoa that was luke warm! It was terrible. Then everyone was "treated"
with a very small piece of candy. Gimme a break. The ride to the "North Pole" was about 20 minutes. There was absolutley nothing on this stinkin' train ride that made it magical or different than a ride on a commuter train into Boston. Now,all of you with little kids KNOW what that means; total BOREDOM for all the kids! I looked around the train at the faces of parents trying to see if maybe I was missing something because I didn't have kids with me. Nope. I think i was one of the lucky ones that didn't have to keep saying,"we're almost there, try to sit nicely". I really felt bad for the families I saw toting 3 and 4 kids. At $35 a pop, that's a lot of money for what was suppose to be a wonderful, magical event.
We finally reached the "North Pole",where lots of elves were going to meet us and bring us to Santa. At this point I'm figuring this is where they probably go all out, lots and lots of elves siging,Christmas lights, maybe some awesome decorations.
All of a sudden, the train stops. No warning to parents to get your kids ready we'll be getting off the train. Now,we're in the middle of the White Mountain National Forest, its freekin' dark
out there! Where's the decorations? No lit up Christmas trees?
No singing? Oh but wait, there are a few(I counted 9,n-i-n-e)elves greeting 2 cars full of excited kids and adults. There were 400 people (maybe 6 cars)and maybe 20 elves. I am not kidding!!
There we all are, dropped off in the dark to walk up the most
pitifully lit path to a building high on a hill. I felt bad for the grammies and grampies that had to navigate this path! There were ruts and puddles(mind you,its dark so we can't see what we're walking in until you feel your feet wet!) Parents were carrying little kids because they couldn't bring carriages!
We finally get to the building where I was convinced this is where the magic will be! All 400 people file in and find a place to sit. I'm thinkin' there's gonna be an awesome show, there's gotta be.
All of sudden, some guy comes out, pulls up a stool, sits down and reads the story from Polar Express. He then tells everyone to call for Santa maybe he'll come out. So out comes the skinniest santa I ever saw! WHAT'S GOIN' ON?????? Santa walks around the crowd a little, picks out a kid( pre picked so he could learn his pathetic lines). And that's it!!!! Santa goes back to making toys and the elves thank everyone for visiting!!!!
I look around again at the faces of people. One mom says to her husband," this was a mean joke". They had 4 lilttle kids. The least amount they spent for their "magical moment" was $210. And that's if they bought coach tickets. When I think I was disappointed I couldn't score the $55 tickets.....
The ride back was quieter because all the little ones were sleeping. Thats when 3 elves thought it would be a good idea to sing Jingle Bells. What a rip off. The best part of that trip was stepping off the train at the North Conway station!!!

OMG! That sounds pathetic! I would have been angry if I had paid for my family of 5 to go

They even skimped on the hot chocolate? Sheesh!

Sorry it was rotten. Perhaps you could post this on epinions to warn others?

Wow I always wished I could go on that one but my kids were too old. My older son used to help out with the one in Melrose on the commuter rail. It was a lot better than what you paid so much for. What a killer. I would find out who runs it and COMPLAIN BIG TIME.

We where going to try and get tickets for the Polar Express up here and I'm glad I didn't waste the money. We decided to go the cheaper route of 45 dollars total and ride the Santa Express. The train ride is 1 1/2 and during the day which works out better for us. Plus the kids still get to see Santa on the train.

wow - that sounds like an awful experience! How sad - hopefully someone will take notice and step up to the plate on this one....

Oh I am so glad I read this!
We were planning to go to the one in New Hope but I had some reservations about it! Just didn't sound like they could pull off anymore than what you described! Plus the cost was outragous!
So now I am definately not going to push to do it! Will ride theWest Chester line for 1/2 the cost and see Santa!

Wow, I'm glad I read this!! I was disappointed when I didn't make the lottery in time:( I'll probably just take the kids on the local Santa Train the Hobo Railroad does every year and this goes during the day light too:) sorry it wasn't so magical...

I know only that the one in North Conway,NH was just terrible.
Please check with people in your areas about the event. It just may be a magical experience. Ours was not.

We found the Christmas Tree Loft was WAY more magical than the Polar Express!

We have tried for the lottery a few years in a row and was never picked. Ds is going with some friends. They were chosen for the Lincoln, NH ride. He is a huge train fan, and a polar express one too. I hope this one is good!!

lol, that's just a couple of minutes away from me;)

...I had paid $10 I wouldn't feel so ripped off. $35 for what was
promised to be a really nice event, just doesn't sit right with me. I have sent a letter to the people who run the event. I doubt anything will come of it,but I think they should know not everyone thinks the Polar Express is a "magical" event.

:rotfl2: I should really read threads through! lol My first impression was "What?? :earseek: I LOVED the movie!!! and the book was really good too!"

Sorry you had such a bad experience.

My kids have been totally enthralled by the book since they were old enough to turn the pages. Our BEST family Christmas memory was the Polar Express from North Conway (the only REAL Polar Express) 4 years ago. (Before the movie came out, obviously... now there are probably higher expectations from kids and parents to see the movie scenes recreated.)

Hundreds, and I mean hundreds of elves met us when the train stopped... wish I could find the photos to post to show them to you.

The hot chocolate was still Swiss Miss, but, in a kids eyes, it was wonderful. The candy was terrific, made especially for the event by Rocky Mt. Candy Co... I have tried and tried to get more through the store, but its only made for them.

The night we went, it was 8 degrees, and we had several feet of snow already- the website had warned to dress warm (not just jammies and slippers)and make sure the kids wore boots. I think in NH, it's pretty much a given that, in December, jammies and slippers just aren't going to cut it for long!

I am so glad that we got to ride the Polar Express before moving to FL... where Christmas is an entirely different experience!

...may have been "magical". 100's of Elves??? Wow! I just counted the elves
in the pictures I took. There were 26 in all.

It was... the worst part about it was the fool in the parking lot who spoiled the surprise for my kids. We had managed NOT to tell them (they were 7 and 4 at the time) where we were going... picked them up at school early, jammies in the car, dinner in N. Conway, wandered around the shops til it was time to board the train... we pull up at the train station, and they're distracted (thank goodness) by the hot air balloon that's on the green for an event. Some guy pulls up and says, in his LOUDEST voice, "IS THIS WHERE I PARK FOR THE POLAR EXPRESS??" I could have died!
