We are planning (hoping) to do an II trade for a European property for a stay in the summer of 2010. Our use Year is October, which means we would not have our 2010 points until after our travel dates. Will we be able to borrow the 2010 points to use for the exchange or will we need to use points from our 2009 use year only?

Thanks!

Exchanges are paid for in the UY they occur unless that UY is 2 years ahead (rarely happens) and given you are already in your 2008 UY, would not occur in this case. So any points you use will have to be in the 2009 UY and you CAN borrow 2010 points into 2009 to make that exchange occur if needed, could use 2009 points or could bank 2008 points into 2009 to use. Just don't borrow until you get an exchange.

Thanks Dean, that's what I was hoping.

You have other timeshares and aren't you an II member. Unless you are going to use Club Cordial, why not look at other options for European trips. Talk to Dial an Exchange also. It's very likely you'll have a much better chance of getting something through II or DAE directly than using DVC and the cost should be much less.

No, no other timeshares and I'm not an II member. We only own at DVC, but thanks for the ideas.

You can still work with DAE using DVC.

I will definitely look into that. Thanks!

Luckily the trip is far enough away that I have plenty of time to research and plan.

Thanks again!

DAE works more on a first come basis than trade power.

Care to enlighten this newbie to trading through anyone other than DVC as to how it works? Any help/advice/tips you could provide would be most appreciated.

We're hoping to spend a month in Europe with two weeks of that time at properties we've traded into. During the other two weeks we'll pay cash for our accommodations. Ideally, we'd like the two weeks to be in Italy, France or Germany (one week each in two of those three places), but we're flexible.

Again, any advice you could provide would be great!

TIA

Please realize I have not yet been to Europe though I have used points for my daughter and a friend to go Rome and Paris. In general timeshares are smaller and have less amenities than in the US. The ones in places like Paris and London are smaller, not as nice and almost impossible to get. The others tend to be a bit further out. Were I looking to go to europe for a month and 2 weeks on exchanges, I'd likely look at some of the nicer resorts then fill in times in between on cash for places like Rome and Paris. I don't know how much you're looking to travel or if you have other options like rewards points.

There are 4 Marriott's but only 1 has 1 BR units and one other has hotel units and 2 BR upwards. If you only need a 1 BR or less, it might be costly to go this route. However, these are the best resorts available and are in great places from what I can tell. If looking at Italy, Germany and Austria, I'd check into the Club Cordial options through BVTC. Do talk to DAE and see what they can offer. I don't think they do request first and you may not want to do deposit first using DVC. San Francisco Exchange is another option for you to look at though I know some of the independents seems to take a step backwards away from DVC when they changed to only talk to the member and thus wouldn't confirm the reservation.

You might also talk to a diamond resort owner (former Sunterra) as they have a lot of properties in Europe.
