points transfer question

I hope this is the right board for this question

I may need to transfer points to my dvc account. I want to make 2 reservations 1) a 7 night stay at SSR for March and 2) a 11 night stay in December. When I look at the rent trade board do I have to choose points that expire beyone the dates I want to reserve? Or can I use points that expire in March to cover the December trip and long as the trip is booked before the points expire?

This is probably a 101 type question but I have never done this before and want to be sure and do it correctly

Also, transferred points can be banked, so you could get current use year points and use what you need for your March trip, then bank the rest and use them for the Dec trip.

When you call to reserve has nothing to do with determining which points you can use for a trip. You always look to when you will be at WDW to determine that issue. Points must be used for a trip that ends before the points expire. You can bank points after they are transferred and thus, for example, if you happen to get October 2011 points in a transfer, you could bank them into the October 2012 use year and use them for a Dec 2012 trip.

However, if you are looking at points that expire in March 2012, meaning April 2011 points, then those are useless for a Dec 2012 trip because you are beyond the banking deadline for them (they had to be banked by Nov 30, 2011) and thus you won't be able to bank them if you purchase them and they must be used for a trip that ends no later than March 31, 2012.
