Points Transfer Question

I figured I would throw this out here to solicit an opinion. I am wanting to get a points transfer from another member that has a UY of August 2010 on the points. This means they will expire on July 31, 2011.

We are planning to do the transfer on June 1st of this year (next week). After the transfer is complete, and I have the points in my account, I am going to book a reservation. This booking will be before the expiration of 7/31.

The reservation is for Sept. 22-25 of this year. Thus the trip will be after the points "expire" on 7/31.

I called Member Services to make sure I could use these points to book next week for a trip in Sept. and he said it would not be an issue. However, he said we would have to bank the points in my account once the transfer is completed, and then we could use them to book our trip. Why? The booking window for August UY points would be March (already passed).

First, are we in agreement I can use these points as described? Secondly, why the banking?

You have been given wrong info and that is a serious error on the CMs part because it could have caused you to do a transfer that was pointless. If you are transferred Aug 2010 points you will not be able to bank them because the banking window for that use year has closed. Thus, they will not be usable for a Sep trip. When you call to reserve (in July) has absolutely nothing to do with whether you must bank or which points you use. You always look only at the dates you will be at WDW to determine whether banking is needed and which points you can use. Thus for a Sep 2011 trip you would need to bank those Aug 2010 points into Aug 2011 use year and you cannot do that.

drusba is definitely right. Those points can only be used to take a trip that occurs before July 31.

This is somewhat difficult to wrap your head around--I know because we're dealing with a similar situation but with points just purchased on resale that have an August UY. Ours are 2011 points so we have more time to play with them but we're booking in November of 2011. I was having trouble figuring out if I had to bank them to make a reservation for Oct. 2012. Yes, we do. Doesn't matter when we CALL; it matters when the reservation is for. Hopefully you haven't already purchased these points.

Perhaps the member will transfer you August 2011 points which will be good until July 31, 2012 and can be banked into the August 2012 UY if needed.

That would be the only way to make it work for you, or find someone else with points that are good for your September booking.
