Points transfer question

I just wanted to make sure of something before I do the transfer. I am planning a big family trip for next Easter. I am planning on making the reservations on May 6th, right at the 11 month window just like I am supposed to. :thumbsup2

My question is about a points transfer. Right now I am in my 2010 UY, my 2011 UY begins in August. I am planning on getting a points transfer from my mom and dad to complete the vacation (they have a ton of points and don't think their going to use them.) Rather than have the points go to waste, I am buying them from my parents. Now, their use year is in June. Can my mom transfer 2011 UY points into my account NOW, even though we are both in our 2010 UY? I will be making these reservations for a trip during my 2011 UY, so it shouldn't be a problem, right? Please help! :confused3

Reason I ask, my mom is convinced she can't transfer the points, and I don't want to wait until June to make my reservations. We are wanting to go over Easter break next year, so I need to book the stuff ASAP! :scared1:

Transfered points retain their home resort status and UY and transfered points can be banked but not borrowed. In addition each membership is allowed one transfer each UY in or out but not both.

One additional item, it's against DVC rules to pay money for transfered points. If MS is told that money is involved, they will not do the transfer and most likely flag your accounts.

You can transfer points from the UY you are in and the next UY. For example, my UY is June, and if I transfer from someone who is also June I can currently transfer the 2010 and 2011 UY points. On June 1, 2011, I can transfer 2011 & 2012 UY points as long as the person I am transferring from is in their 2011 UY. Awesome that your family is all DVC members! (If your mom is the person who is transferring the points, couldn't she also just make the reservation for you and you not have to worry about transferring then you could just link them? Might be easier.)

Yes! Your Mom can transfer them in now. They will also still be good when you need them.

Thanks taaren. You are right, but I am kind of nutso about making the reservations and stuff myself (yeah I guess I have control issues) so I am having the points to me so I can do it myself.:confused3

Disneynutz Bill, we definitely won't do anything illegal, but if that is the case why does the disboards have the Rent / Trade thread? :confused3

You are permitted to sell a reservation to someone (as long as you don't become a commercial operation), but no compensation can be given for transfers. It comes down to points don't have a value, so you can't assign a value to those. But a reservation can have a value, so you can charge a value for a reservation.

Your parents could make a reservation for you using their points and you make a reservation using your points and link them. But your parents retain ownership of their reservation and you own your reservation.

You don't really rent points, you sell the reservation to another person because the points are useless to anyone but the owner.

Ok, I think I get it. In order for there to be "official" compensation my parents make the reservations, but in my name. So if I have, say, 150 points to get rid of in my use year, I can get rid of them to someone for $10 per point. Instead of transferring the points to their account, I make the reservation in their name. I retain ownership of the reservation. Is that correct, or am I still confused? :confused3 And couldn't that be a little risky for BOTH parties? Now in my case it's family, but if I were to perform this kind of transaction with a person I didn't know, that would make me a bit nervous.:scared1:

In reality, no money is changing hands in this transaction anyway, but I do have some points that I would rather give up than lose. They have a whole bunch of points that we don't want to go to waste. :) Just trying to figure out how the whole thing works so that we don't lose out.

Not quite. Both making a reservation for someone other than your family is possible as is transferring points. It's just that a transfer cannot be compensated according to the Public Offering Statement. "Club Members are expressly prohibited from receiving compensation for engaging in any Transfer activity." It doesn't say that for renting reservations.

Pull out your copy and read it through. You'll discover a lot about DVC.

Actually, they will let you transfer farther out than that. I didn't know it either but I just got a 2012 UY transfer last week. My UY is also June.

We thought that we might have to wait to June 1st to do it as well, because we were only in the 2010 UY, but MS completed it without any issues.

And, it even shows up as a transfer into my 2012 UY that I can see on my member account--probably because the points were the same UY and home resort as what I own. I was told it counts as my one and only for 2012.

Ok, I did that, and that's why I am asking the question. Again, just so I am clear there is no compensation. This is going to be a transfer from my mom to me, so there are no worries.

If I had points that I was going to lose for whatever reason, and instead of losing them I wanted to "Rent" them, how do I go about it? Do I make the reservation for that person? How am I allowed to get compensated for the points?

Here is a scenario, and maybe it can be explained better. I have number removed points that are going to expire in date removed. They are points that were previously banked, so I can't bank them again, but I am not going to be able to use them because I just can't get away on vacation. If I have no family members that want to use them, I can "rent" them. In order to do that, I have to make a reservation in the person's name that I am renting them to, and they are allowed then, by DVC rules, to compensate me for the RESERVATION, but not the points (technically). Am I correct in understanding this, or am I way off? :confused3

If you want to rent out a reservation with your points, you would find someone who wants a reservation. You and the renter then agree on the terms of the rental--price per point, cancellation, payment, etc.--and then you call DVC and make the reservation using your points in their name.

The reservation stays on your account and you are in control the whole time. You will have to be the one to set up ME, DDP, etc. for the renter. And, just so you know, you remain responsible for the actions of your renter--so, if there is damage or they leave and there is an issue with charges, your DVC account is suspended until you get the renter to take care of them.

And, per DVC rules, you are allowed to receive compensation for this. As mentioned, technically, you are not allowed to pay for a transfer (which in your case, you are not) but many members do it--they simply don't let MS know when making the call that that is the case.

What you do between you and your Mom is your business. I just wanted you to know that officially transferring points for money is against the rules. Just because the DIS has a rent/transfer section doesn't mean that people do it for money. :cool1:

One other question, are the points for the same home resort? If not, you can't use your Moms points at 11 months, only at 7.

:earsboy: Bill

Yeah, the points are at the same resort. Most of my family are part of the DVC, all of us bought at SSR.

Thanks for all the info! It cleared things up for me. :thumbsup2

See, that's the thing that I am not liking about the "renting." If I was sending someone I knew, that would be one thing. But sending someone I don't know I run the risk of them screwing things up for me in the future.

Thanks for the info! :thumbsup2

While I think those instances are rare, to be honest, that is one of the reasons I could never rent to strangers. I have enough people in my family that I can give my points to, if we can't go, to never have to rent.

Have a great time planning your trip!

Is banking transferring? I.E. I have a family member that wants to give me points that are going to expire before he will use them. Can I have them transferred in, and bank whatever points I don't plan on using of mine to the following year?

As long as the points are not already banked by your family member you can bank whatever points are remaining after the transfer is done but remember the transferred points still retain the same UY and banking deadlines for that UY.

Quick question - how can David's service advertise and offer money (10.00 pp) to buy 350 or more points to be transferred to his accounts (he says several times on the rent/trade board that he will not accept less then that and he as already used up all 2010 transfers) Just curious

Wild guess but I wondered if maybe he has contracts with different UY's. Since each UY would mean a different membership, each would be able to get one transfer in each year.
