Can you get points from a member, through renting, at their home resort, and reserve a room at their resort at the 11 month mark, even if the points rented from the member is insufficient to cover the total points needed to cover the cost of the reservation; but at the 7 month window, your points would be sufficient to make up the difference?
For example, you rent 100 points from a member at their resort, they make a reservation at their resort for you at the 11 month mark, but the total points needed is, say 300 points. Now, at the 7 month mark you will have your points to cover the 200 point difference. Will DVC make the reservation at the 11 month window, knowing you'll have your points to make up the difference at the 7 month mark.

No you have to have all the points required at the home resort (home resort points) to make a reservation at 11 months. I own at 2 resorts and cannot make a ressie at BLT for 7 nights using both BLT and SSR points at 11 months I can only book accommodations for my BLT points and add on nights using SSR at 7 months if there is availability. Same goes with me booking THV I had to use all SSR points (borrowed 2012 points) to complete my 10 night ressie and I banked 2011 BLT points to use at a later date.

If you get points from a member through renting, you can't do anything with the points. The member maintains complete control of those points at all times until you check into the resort on the reservation that they made. Even if you are a DVC member. Those points are never yours.

Now, if you are a member and are getting a transfer from another member, you can use those points at 11 months out to reserve at their home resort. You basically get a one time use of those points until they expire.

But no matter what reservation you make, you must have the points available to make the reservation.

If you have your own points and they are in the next use year, you can borrow them if you need to. They just have to be in your account to make the reservation. For example, you want to make a reservation that requires 300 points for December 2012. You have the 100 points you transferred. Your UY is June. Your June UY give you 200 points. A reservation in December 2012 would fall into your June 2012 UY and you would have the points available (as long as you hadn't used them to book another reservation) when you wanted to make the reservation for Dec 2012 in Jan 2012.

"Renting points" is a bit of a misnomer....what you're actually doing is renting a reservation from a member. Only the owner of the points is permitted to make a reservation, cancel a reservation, add the dining plan, etc.

You'll arrange payment with a member, they'll call and make the reservation for you. They MUST have the correct number of points for that reservation available for use at the time of the stay. If they're short points, DVC Member Services will not make the reservation.

So, if I'm understanding correctly, you would want a member to make a reservation for you at 11 months at their home resort, then cancel that reservation and make a reservation at a different resort at 7 months?

Not cancel the reservation, but pay outstanding balance with my home resort points, ie get the reservation at another resort at 11 month window, and pay the remaining balance at 7 months when I can use my home resort points to pay off the balance. Or can the member make a reservation for me at their home resort, if they have the points; then (at 7 months) transfer points from my home resort to the other member.
What I want to do is have another member reserve at their home resort ( Aulani) at 11 months, then payback with my home resort points to the member who made the reservation at their home resort. Or, can I transfer my points to that member to make me the reservation at the 11 month window, using my home resort points; if that person doesn't have enough of his points to cover the reservation? Or, have that member make reservation with his points, and pay that person with my points?
This is a pretty convoluted quwstion, not sure if it makes sense.

It sounds like you want to trade Home Resort Priority with somebody, preferably somebody who owns more points than you? Finding somebody to trade points with is tough, but do-able. I've done it a couple of times ...

Your home resort points remain that home resort, even if you transfer them to someone with Aulani as their home resort. So if you own SSR, those points will always be SSR points and never Aulani points.

Look on the Rent/Trade Board and see if there is anyone with Aulani points and pose the question to them.

You probably need a member who owns at Aulani to book with their points at 11 months out and at the same time you transfer your points to them (same number of points). You won't own the reservation (it will still belong to the original member), but you won't be out cash. But you'd have to find someone who wants the points you have.

Thanks Taaren and Deb and Bill, thats what I was trying to find out; sorry it took writing a book, when ya'll put it so succinctly. Wish I could do that, its an inate talent to boil it down to simple/understandable terms.
