I was just checking the account for an upcoming trip and I noticed something with my points. I am hoping someone can help me figure this out.

dec UY annual allotment of 240 points.

It is showing that I borrowed 76 points from 2016.

also showing banked 50 points from 2016 into 2017.

Now this is where I am confused. It is showing I have 214 points in my 2017 UY, which is correct, but only 164 available for banking. Obviously, that is 50points, which should make sense but if I only have 214 points in 2017, that means somewhere along the way, my regular 2017points were used before my 50 banked points were used.

What are some situations where this would occur? The only thing I can think might be related is that I had to scramble to rearrange reservations last September when the hurricane hit. I was assured that everything would be put back where it was supposed to be. I did borrow from 2017 as a result but why would my 2016 50 points not have been used for this.

I know it is confusing. If someone has a better way for me to show it here, I would be happy to change it. Is this something that will be easily answered by MS?

From what I read you borrowed 76 points from 2017 and then banked 50 points into 2017. If that is the case then the math is correct. Borrowing 76 from 2017 brought you to 164 for 2017. Then you banked 50 points (those would be 2016 points into 2017) leaving you with 214. 50 of those 214 couldn't be banked because they are already banked from 2016 meaning you would have 164 that can be banked into 2018.

That's the way I see it: 240 points in 2017 - 76 points borrowed into 2016 + 50 points banked from 2016 into 2017 = 214 total points to use in your 2017 UY. 240-76 = 164 current 2017 points for banking.

Without knowing what reservations you had or how they were made for 2016 it's difficult to answer why points were borrowed but it sounds like you know you did borrow. If later changes reduced nights and point requirements they would have freed up current 2016 points so that they could be banked since borrowed points can't be put back in the UY they are borrowed from.

If you feel the borrowing did not have to be done back when you made the changes you could contact MS and see if they would make the 50 points bankable.

Thanks for replying. Rereading my note, I realize that it sounds like I borrowed first then banked, which is not the case. Sorry.

In April, 2017 I booked a reservation for Sept 2017 using 2016UY points. At that point, we had 92 points left in the 2016UY, which we banked in July, bringing our 2017UY total to 332.

Then I had to change reservations in September due to the sept hurricane. They assured me that I would not have to worry about the points going back into the correct place. In the end, I had 256 for UY2017. (This is where the borrowing happened since I was still in my 2016UY but everything had been banked, I had to borrow to get it back to my 2016 UY). So I spent an extra 76 over the original reservation.

In Feb 2018, I booked another vacation for April 2018 (2017UY) bringing my 2017UY points down to 214, spending 42 additional points of my 2017 allotment.

It is showing only 164 points eligible to be banked in July 2018, meaning 50 with be lost if we don't use them by Dec 1 2017.

My question is: why wouldn't those 50 points been used when we rearranged the Sept vacation and again for this April vacation?

That is happening because of the original 92 points that you banked from your 2016 UY into your 2017 UY prior to your Sept stay. And understandably so since your banking deadline would have been July 31, 2017. So in order to extend your Sept trip the only option they had was to borrow actual 2017 points as you had banked and just like borrowing that is a final transaction. Now, of those 92 points originally banked you used 42 of them for the April 2018 trip leaving 50 banked points. They were not used because banking is final.

I don't see that anything was technically done incorrectly with the points when you made the change due to the hurricane but you could always contact MS and see if they would make an exception which essentially would have allowed un-banking of the 2016 points and leave you with 214 bankable points.

Ok, I think that makes sense now. I just can't wrap my head around why they wouldn't have used my 92 banked points when I needed 76 extra for the september trip changes. They had been banked at that point and should have been used first, right? But obviously, I am not understanding something about how those banked points can be used. It's only 50 points. We can plan an extra trip down before they expire. I just was flustered by it all. I have upwards of 20 transactions for that september trip due to trying to shuffle everything around, borrowing, holding, reserving, canceling. It was so confusing and I thought maybe it was just done incorrectly.

The points had already been banked into your 2017 UY (for stays from Dec 1, 2017-Nov 30 2018) and the September stay was still in your 2016 UY. Since banking points is a final transaction that moved them into your 2017 UY that is where they had to stay and they couldn't be pulled back into your 2016 UY without some exception being made. But your current 2017 points were eligible to be borrowed into your 2016 UY so that is what they did. Banked points are used first for reservations but only in the UY they were banked into. So if your stay that you had to use the 76 points on had been after Dec 1, 2017 then the banked points could have been used.

Thank you! Now I get it! OK I was missing the piece that the 2016 banked points can't be used for 2016 reservations. I really do appreciate it.
