we are looking into DVC and are still trying to work out how many points we will need.
Based on 09 points chart it says for a standard view, one bed home for a week its 225 oints in magic season AKL,but for the same in 2010 its 224points.

Do the points go up or down each year?would we need to top up at any stage?

How can we be sure we have bought enough points?

Unfortunately Disney can adjust the points when ever they want to. If the points are raised somewhere, they must be lowered somewhere else.

There last adjustment caused us to come up short 25 points per year for our typical vacations times.

Fortunately, DVC has the responsibility to adjust the points to maintain the occupancy balance. They have done this on three occasions (1996, 2010 and again in 2011).

As noted, in order for any nights to be raised, others must be lowered since the total number of points at each resort cannot be changed. Those that purchased a certain number of points for a specific stay may have noticed an increase in the number of points needed for their stay, while others have found the total needed to have decreased. An increase has mostly affected those who wish to stay only on weeknights and purchased enough points for 5 night stays.

As long as potential buyers review the purchase documents, they should be aware of at least the potential for such reallocation - not that it makes it any more palatable when is actually happens. There are also other modifications allowed in the legal documents - such as the Home Resort Priority could be changed from the 4 month advantage currently in place to a one-month advantage. 4 months has been in place since DVC began, but the documents allow for that to be changed (raised or lowered). IMO, it's well worth reviewing the documents before comminitting to purchase since the written documents take precedence over any verbal statement made by a DVC guide.

prior to the last reallocation - which was spread over 2 years in 2010 and 2011 - pt charts didn't change much for 15 years. no telling what the current DVC management is thinking as to whether reallocations will become more common.

the general advice is to buy an extra 15-20 pts or so as a buffer against future reallocations.

DVC has also begun to offer "top up" pts - if you need a few pts (up to 24 per year) to complete a reservation, DVC will rent them to you at the 7 month window. it's another option anyway...

Before you buy make sure you look at the 2011 point charts (go to top of this page to the right and click "DVC Point Charts" where you will find them for 2010 and 2011). In its 20 year history Disney has done two point changes, one in the early 1990s at OKW, and then the latest one affecting all resorts which was done over two years for 2010 and 2011, thus 2011 chart will be more important to view for estimation of points than 2010. That two year shift was mainly one lowering weekend points and raising weekday, they did part of it in 2010 and the rest for 2011.

Disney could possibly do shifting again which could lower or raise the total you might need for your usual planned tripped because any increase in a season or week must be met with a decrease elsewhere so that total points applicable to the resort do not change..

Yeah, it changes around a bit. For some it's painful, for others it's beneficial...then it might flipflop on who it's good for, depending on what trip they are planning.

Our trip (or part of our trip? can't remember what all I looked up) would be "cheaper" in 2011 than it actually is this year. Oh well!

I think that in 2011 that same villa is 228 points for a week in Magic Season. I agree with the other posts that to be safe buy an extra 10 to 15 points.

Oh don't be silly... you can NEVER have enough points! :thumbsup2

No, you definitely can have too many points. Add up those member fees you pay each year and you'll see why. They go up and up and up each year.

It's called discipline, people.
