Points getting back after making reservation?

We are new DVC members and we made a reservation using 2016 points for December trip this year. We are considering cancelling this trip. Even though we made a reservation, we can get them back and bank them for 2017 right? Or are they permanently banked in 2016 just because we made a reservation?

I think I read that as long as we cancel before the deadline we get them back but I want to confirm!

As long as you cancel 31 days or more prior to arrival, the points you used will be returned to your account in the same status they had just before you made the reservation. So if you used 2016 points for the December 2016 reservation and cancelled more than 31 days in advance, you could bank the returned points. Of course, that assumes your banking deadline hasn't passed.

Thanks for the info. Would this also apply if using bank, borrowed, or transferred points?

If you were using banked or borrowed points, they would be returned to your account as banked or borrowed points. They would expire at the end of the use year of your reservation.

Transferred points retain their original use year. You may or may not be able to bank those - it would depend on the specific attributes of the transferred points.
