This question is directly to long-time DVC members. I am a newbie -- bought in 2008. I realize that the DVC points charts changed a bit in 2009.

My question is -- how often do these charts change? My concern is that the 210 points that I currently own will not go very far in, say, 10 years.

I look forward to your input. Thanks!

Karen

They have changed exactly twice over the years. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Both changes were increases in one place and decreases in another. If your stays are mostly less than a week or you have exactly enough points for a lower season or smaller unit for your trips, you could get caught in such a change. No reason to worry though unless something actually happens negative to your situation.

point costs can't just go up. if pt costs for weeknights go up, then weekends have to come down. if pt costs for december go up, then pt costs for another month will have to come down.

(which, as dean says, stinks if you only bought enough to stay specifically on weeknights or specifically in december.)

i would not be too surprised to see weeknights go up again in 2011 but there's really no telling...they may wait and see how people adapt to the 2010 changes...

regardless, all talk of the 2010 changes is limited to this thread, so if you'd like more input, that is where you can read the (really, really long) discussion.

There are, of course, normal seasonal changes yearly, depending upon the date Easter and Thanksgiving fall, but as far as full chart reallocations, Dean is correct, it has happened twice, at OKW in 1996 and BWV's chart was redone (prior to resort opening) to include the preferred view categories, then all charts were reallocated in 2010.

There's a reallocation limit of +/-20% (I think it was 20 anyway, I'd have to reread to confirm) in the contract as well, so no one point value should change more than 20% in a given year. However, they could make 20% changes multiple years in a row, which I believe some people were afraid of in the linked discussion thread given the fact that some of the reallocations were in the 15% range this year.

Here is an example of changes in points from 2009 to 2010 for Saratoga Springs:

In 2009, a week-long stay in a 1-bedroom during the Magic season (6/1 - 6/10) is 225 points, but in 2010 it will cost only 224 points.

However, a 5-night stay on Sunday thru Thursday is 125 points in 2009, but will cost 140 points in 2010, an increase of 12%.

Although the weekday points are going up, the Friday-Saturday points are dropping in 2010. A 2-night weekend stay costs 100 points in 2009, but in 2010 it will cost 84 points, a drop of 16%.

We bought into DVC assuming that adjustments will be made in the point charts in the years to come. Some changes might benefit us but, since I'm a firm believer in Murphy's Law, we bought a few more points than what we currently need.

Thanks for your input. I'm going to check out the posted thread on this topic. :flower3:
