Point Transfer Question - same owner, multiple contracts

I have done some reading on point transfer and I have a question.

Let's say I have two contracts in the same UY for multiple resorts. I think Disney considers this as one master contract and one sub-contract, which means only one member number. At 7 months out all my points become the same pool. But I am limited to one transfer in or out for that member number. Do I have the option to choose to have two member numbers for different contracts in the same UY so I have more flexibility in outside transfer?

On the other hand, let's say I have two contracts in different UY, say Jun and Dec. If I had transferred IN to my Jun contract from a third party (different owner), can I transfer OUT from my Jun to my Dec contract (same owner)? I read that it is at MS discretion to multiple transfers for same owner, but the examples I see usually doesn't involve external transfers to the same accounts.

Thanks.

If you truly have a Master contract with add-on contracts, you don't need to worry about doing any transfers to use the points. At 7 months, you can combine the points any way you want. A Master contract will have a number with a suffix of .000 ( so maybe 12345678.000) and the add-ons will have the same "master" number with suffixes of .001, .002, .003, etc. This arrangement will have only one membership number. With such an arrangement, you get one transfer per use year either into the membership or out of it, but not both in the same use year.

If you have different use years, you will have two different membership numbers / accounts. You are allowed one transfer per use year per membership either into the account or out of it, but not both in the same year. So with two membership numbers, you would be allowed one transfer for each. But a transfer between them would use up the entitlement for both for the use year in question.

MS has usually been accommodating to members who have multiple memberships and want to combine points to make a reservation. However, it is a courtesy, not an entitlement. I do not know if having used a transfer to a third party would impact the "courtesy" or not. I would guess not.

Thanks Carol.

If I have a contract in one UY and add a contract resale with the same UY, do I have the option to get a separate membership number for that second contract, even though it's the same UY?

If it is titled differently then it will not be associated with your current membership(new number) but then you will not b able to use the points to make one reservation unless you transfer them.

As noted, if they are all under one master, they work together at the 7 month window but you only have one transfer in or out per UY. Also as noted, you could title them differently (add or remove a name) to have them listed separately.

For multiple separate contracts of a single owner, the rules are technically the same and you could have one in or out for each master. You are essentially treated as 2 different owners. A transfer from one to the other takes both of those transfers. However, for this situation DVC will often allow flexibility on a case by case basis. Basically for something you can't do with them being separate but can do if they're combined. Examples would be for a single night's stay or where all points have to be in one contract like some of the exchange options. I would assume they would say no just to get a reservation all under one contract such as trying to use the option of booking 7 days at one time at the 7 or 11 month window. All you can do is ask and you may be told yes or no. Sometimes if you don't get the answer you want you can call and get someone else or talk to a supervisor.

Thanks Dean. Sounds like more trouble than it's worth so I will just title them the same and get one membership number.

What if you have two contracts at the same resort? For example - we own at Aulani and are considering adding points and we were looking at resale. Can you combine the two contracts for one stay? Still new to this and I'm so confused.

Based on my understanding, they will be combined under the same member number if they are titled exactly the same. Since they are at the same resort, the pool of points will essentially be combined.

That is my interpretation. Like most things we discuss here, there are always exceptions, but the hassle isn't worth it for most people. I'd say one specialty situation that it does sometimes make sense is for the member that plans 2 or more trips a year that are consistent in time of year and resort,, esp if we're talking 2 larger contracts. When they changed the banking rules, this took away one of the largest benefits to having them combined so having separate contracts is not as much as a detriment as it once was. Still, for almost everyone having them combined is the best, easiest and most streamlined approach.

That's been true historically but there is no guarantee it will happen (sometimes it hasn't and they won't "fix" it) and I believe it may eventually be a casualty of the resale restrictions where you have to add on retail to get this option.

We bought resale for the same resort AKL with the same use year. It shows 100 and then 55 points but basically they are all bundled as 155 when we go to use them.

But then we went and added VWL with a different UY and that has a separate membership number.

I have several contracts under 1 membership number and also 1 small contract under a different membership number (it is titled differently.) Both memberships have the same use year.
I had used my one transfer under the "larger" membership for 2012, transferring in points from another DVC member.
I wanted to transfer and bank points from the smaller membership that I own into my second membership. I called MS and was allowed to transfer points (2012 also) from the smaller membership to my larger one. So it may be in a case such as mine, that you can have two transfers within the same use year.

Thanks for that color. That's kinda what I had in mind in the first place. I know it's at the discretion of Disney but it's nice to know real world examples where this has been done.
