Good morning! We own DVC points at Bay Lake Tower and are considering having points transferred to our account to gain the home resort booking window at another resort. I have never done a transfer before and have a few questions. Once we find an owner willing to transfer us points, how does it work? Who calls MS? If I am the member receiving the points, do I have to give the other member my DVC membership # in order to have them send me points? When do people typically send payment, before or after the transfer is complete? If our trip is for is August 2012 and the other member has a June UY, they could transfer us '11 or '12 points, because the '11 points can be banked, right? I know transferred points won't show up on my DVC account online, so how will I know they are there? Sorry for all of the questions... I just don't want to mess this up. Thanks for any help you may have for me. :goodvibes

To make sure you get the home resort booking window (11 to 7 months) at a resort other then BLT you will have to get the full amount of points transferred into you account to cover your stay.

Very good, thanks for your help. Do I just need to give the other member my name and membership #?

Transferred points will not show online when you pull up your member account, so what you will need to do is about an hour after transferring member tells you that they've transferred points over to your account, give MS a call to verify that the amount of points you were expecting are there ( if you aren't on a conference call with MS and that member when the transfer is made ).

And MS is likely not going to allow the other member's 2012 points to be transferred now because only current UY points are transferable to the same UY ( their 2011 to your 2011 UY ).

You can bank June 2011 pts into 2012, those would then be valid 6/1/2012 thru 5/31/2013. afaik you will not be able to get the transfer of June 2012 pts just yet, since the 11 month owner's priority window for a trip in August 2012 does not open until Sept 1 2011 that 2012 points transfer may not be allowed until closer to Sept 1 2011. If you are still in your 2010 UY you may want to look into transferring in 2010 UY points if that member has Sept Oct or Dec uy month because those are bankable and would cover dates for Aug 2012 trip and then have June 2011 UY points transferred and bank those as well.

Giving your Membership number is safe and usually how most do transfer
( other member will not be able to access your account just because they have your membership number since they don't know the last 4 digits of your social sec # or whatever your verification is that MS asks you for ).

Most member's want payment upfront but some will accept half before calling MS and then half when transfer is complete; note that any payment 'discussions', etc. heard by MS will result in pts transfer being voided, so keep that in mind if you and the transferring member are on conference call with ms.

MS is very good about helping member's through the transfer process; some CMs are more experienced with it than others so ask to speak with one who is.

Good luck :goodvibes

5forDiz, thank you. That was very helpful. I do have someone who may be willing to do the transfer, and their UY is June. (so is mine) Will MS allow '11 UY points to be transferred now (into my '11 UY), even though we are still in our '10 UY? I know the 11 month mark isn't until September, but I'd feel better about having the transaction completed ASAP. Thanks so much for your help.

I thought I read that you could transfer your next UY points into someone else's same (next) UY.

The reason this came up was this: You can't leagally accept cash for a transfer, and you can only have one transfer in or out per UY, so you can't just swap points (I wish you could.)

So, the scenario was: Could I transfer out my 2010 (current) points to someone else (who is still in there 2010 UY,) while at the same time transfer thier 2011 UY points to my 2011 UY (knowing that they can't be borrowed or used until that specific UY starts for those points.)

I have not tried this, but I'd like to.

Yes. You can transfer current UY points and the next UY's points. Right now, someone with a June UY, can transfer 2010 UY points (since that is the UY we are in) and 2011 UY points.

As soon as the 2011 UY starts, June 1st, then a member can transfer 2011 UY and 2012 UY points.

So, if you want the transfer now, it would have to be 2011 UY points. If you wait until June 1st to do the transfer, they can send you 2011 or 2012 UY. If you get the 2011 UY points, you can bank them.

If you got 2011 UY points now, however, I don't think (but not positive) you can bank them until you enter the 2011 UY, which would be June 1st

Yes, this can be done. As you said, it is one transfer in or out for your UY, but you are allowed to transfer both current and next UY points at the same time.

MS will need to know the name and city/state of residence of the member receiving the transfer. They do not need the membership number but having the last 4 digits of the member number might help if there is any confusion ( ie - multiple members with the same name living in the same city).

MS will go thru the usual littany of caveats (irreversible transaction, can't borrow transferred points but can bank them, will retain same Home Resort and expiration date after transfer, etc.) and will also provide a transfer confirmation number. I'd suggest that the transferring member write that down and send it to the receiving member. The points will likely be gone from the account before the phone call has ended and can be verified on the member website. They should be in the receiving member's account within an hour or so.

Enjoy! :)

Sorry to hi jack thread, if a member is getting points transfered into their account UY 2010 and they are a different resort from their home resort and they transfer them into UY 2011 can they use them straight away as well as their home resort to make a booking or will MS use your home resort first. Hope Ive explained this properly.

Transferred points retain their home resort and UY so if you get 2011 UY points transferred into your account, they can be used for travel during the 2011 UY for THOSE points, not based on your UY (if it is different).

Same with if its a different resort. Those points can be used prior to 7 months at the resort they came from.

For example, if you own BLT and transfer in BWV points. At 11 months, you can book BLT with your BLT points and the BWV with BWV points. That is what MS will do.

If you are booking within the 7 month mark, and have a set way you want them to take from your account (ie: use transferred before home), then just be sure to tell them which ones to take.

I see you already know that these points won't show up online. Just one more caveat....MS will mess these up every time they look at them so keep a detailed record of your points by year and the transferred points by year. We received a transfer of points - same resort as our home, but different UY. The transferred points are "tracked" offline, so MS always just had totals. We had issues when we tried to bank, when we booked and, oh what a mess when I had to cancel and re-book.
