We won't be purchasing for a while but I think I've finally talked DH into realizing it's a good investment (for me, anyway :lmao:) I keep reading the boards and get most of my questions answered that way regarding UY (still iffy on this but that's another discussion), home resorts, etc etc. I didn't see this answered (though I'm sure it has been at some point and I just missed it...so sorry in advance!)

I am wondering about points transfers bt members. My example: say we have 160 points at SSR. One year, we want to get a grand villa somewhere or maybe a treehouse or whatnot bc all our family wants to join us (treehouse - 286 points for dream season, 1 week, grand villa at say, AK SV, 622 points...). Okay, for the sake of the argument I suppose we could just easily bank some points and use those to use the treehouse villa. But, say we use 2 years worth of points (320) and want to pay for the other 302 points to rent from another member...

How would this work? I am renting for the first itme this fall and that has gone smoothly, but I don't know how it'd work if we were combining points bt ours at SSR (for AKV...assuming we can get the grand villa at 7 months out!!). WOuld it matter if the other person has AKV as their home resort? Do they just call in a point transfer and thats that? ...

TIA for all the help...love these boards!! :goodvibes

You would simply seek a transfer of points to your account. If they are AKV points, then you can use those at the 11 month window to book some of the nights. At 7 months, you could add more nights with your SSR points to book the rest.

Or, you could get points from any other resort and at 7 months combine them with yours to try and book. Transfers are a final transaction so you would not be able to "return" them to the owner if you can't book what you want.

I have not done a transfer but from what I understand it is pretty simple, once terms are determined between each of the owners.

Hi! :goodvibes Thanks for the quick reply - glad to hear it's pretty easy. I can completely understand not being able to "give back" the points though - makes transferring the points sort of tricky if we want to get the 11-month timeframe down. Oh well, at least it's an option!!

you can also borrow as well as banking, so with 160/year you could use 480 points before you had to do a transfer (or rent) points.

Along the topic of transfers, what exactly are the steps to do it? Are both Members on the phone and can hear the other validating their info??

I also wondered about that. Plus, doesn't the DVC contract specifically say you can NOT accept money for transfers? So that is something else to make sure is NOT mentioned on the phone when on with Member Services, right?

Yes, if MS gets any indication that there will be money exchanged for the transfer they will refuse to complete it.

I have not done one myself but have read that it is done both ways, sometimes as a three way call and sometimes with just the owner calling in.

There is a possibility that I will be doing a transfer at some point in the next year and my hope is that it goes really smoothly.

The only information needed by MS is the name and city of residence of the member who will receive the transferred points. The transferring member will, of course, provide his/her member # and identification but will not need to know the member # of the member receiving the points. MS will advise the member that this is a irreversible transaction and the transfer will occur.

Some have done this with a conference call, but most do not.

i've transferred out a few times.
very simple:
i verify the paypal funds have been deposited into my account.
i immediately call MS to initiate the transfer, then call the other member. they verify the points are in their account.
tho MS does state it might not be instanteous, every time it's all been completed within minutes (literally).
:)
