Ok.... so this is kind of funny. As a lot of you know, last year I bought a Pentax K100D at the recommendation of some from here and I LOVE IT!!!!!:cool1: However, ever since then, I guess I give off the impression to my family members that I'm knowledgeable about photography and I haven't corrected them yet. :rolleyes1 I can't give away ALL my little secrets, (like the fact that I know nothing; I just come here first!!) So here's a question that was posted to me by my DSIL: She is looking for a new camera in the not-so-distant future and I was wanting to see what everyone here thought or recommended. The BIGGEST thing is that she wants a quick reaction speed, meaning when they press the button they don't want it to take 3 seconds and have lost the shot by then. But the rest are: quick reaction speed, fairly decent shutter speed for action shots, good zoom, and no accessories. As soon as she said no accessories, I knew she wasn't really looking for a DSLR. (Not to mention my DB would throw it against the wall rather than take the patience to really learn and appreciate it.) So what does everyone here recommend?

It sounds like any of the current generation superzooms will fit the bill. Most have the 1/2.5" sensor, so high ISO performance is about the same on all of them. I would suggest one with optical IS though b/c at those long focal lengths it come in very handy. The most popular around here is probably the S5 IS. I have had two models in that line, and were happy enough to recommend them. Our S2 recently died, but it was being primarily used by the kids, so who knows what happened.

Thanks Kevin!! As soon as I posted that, I had the same thought. So far my DB/DSIL have had only Sony cameras, so I went to see what high zoom cameras they had and found 2: DSC-H10 and the DSC-H50. For about $100 difference the H50 comes with 15x zoom instead of 10x, a max shutter speed of 1/4000 instead of 1/2000, and the sensor is 1/2.3 instead of the usual 1/2.5. Not to mention, like I said they have only owned Sony so far so that means they don't have to buy any new memory sticks like I did. But has anyone heard anything good/bad about either of these?? :confused3

I don't have this years model, but I do have last years model (DSC-H9). I love it. Seems to work fine in most situations. I have taken action shots, landscape, and macro with this camera and most have been above my expectations. Here is my adobe gallery link if you want to see my stuff. https://www.photoshop.com/user/melissaholleman

You may also be able to search flikr and see pictures others have taken from the newest cameras from the line.

Best of luck helping them out, Melissa
