Point Experts Needed

Hey all!

I’m coming up on the deadline to bank my points (July 31st for use year December).. we have had so many trip cancellations, reschedules, borrowing and banking the last 2 years that I have now thoroughly confused myself and can’t make heads or tails of it.

Does this mean I’m on track to lose 42 points?

We have a trip planned in November of this year- I’m assuming the 85 is already reflective of that being deducted?

Thanks in advance for any insight, I do not know why this is so hard for me to wrap my head around but right when I think I’ve gotten the hang of it- nope.

I should add an additional detail. We banked 64 points into this current year which brought us to a total of 190 for the 2021 use year. We have taken one trip this far and including the trip we have yet to take those come to 105 points- this would more than use the 64 points banked that will expire this December.

So I can’t figure out why the full 85 points available to me now are not all bankable?

You have 85 points in your 2021 UY. Of those 85, 42 are either banked, borrowed or in holding. Those 42 points cannot be banked. The points used for your November trip have already been deducted from your total available points.

My advice is to check to see whether your November trip is using any points that are part of your December 2021 allocation. If so, you can reallocate the 42 "unbankable" points and free up the current allocation of points. The easiest way to do this is to modify the reservation online without changing dates. Go through the process to the end and click on "How are my vacation points taken?" This should automatically substitute the unbankable points for any points from your current allocation. You can then bank any points that were freed up.

Agree! Modify (as if you are changing dates) but don't and then click to see Summary page and it should adjust points again if needed.

You may have booked before you cancelled and it took current use year points instead of past use year.

My last question for member services is going to be if I will be able to bank 126 points if I can cancel the November trip. We banked 64 points end of last year,l (which brought us to 190) and used exactly 64 points on our trip in June.

Unfortunately you cannot reallocate points for a trip you have already taken (the June trip). I suspect you used the banked points in an earlier reservation that you subsequently cancelled after you booked the June trip (which then would have used current year points). Or maybe you booked the November trip before you booked the June trip. In any event, cancelling the November trip would leave you with points that you cannot bank as you found out when you briefly cancelled your November trip.

Ugh- I suspect you are right. When I planned the June trip I booked 2 reservations for 2 different room types- we didn’t know how large of a group we would have.

Now that I think about it, I cancelled the one I made first, first.

I’m so disappointed in myself for not looking into this further- I just wrongly assumed banked points would always be used first. I never considered all of these other factors. Lesson learned I guess.

We have a lot going on that makes november a tough trip to take, I’m apprehensive to try renting the points out because the availability through the end of the year is so tight.

With November being booked up, you might do well by renting the reservation out rather than the points. All of the brokers will gladly list your confirmed reservation and take their fee when it rents.

Reallocations are never automatic so even when used first, if you cancel that trip, one must go in and modify or call to have things changed up.

The system does use your banked points first but you had already used them in your first reservation when you made your second reservation so the system used current year points. For future reference, you could have gone in and modified your second June reservation after you cancelled the first one you made and it would have then used your banked points. As Sandisw said above, this does not happen automatically. You have to modify or contact Member Services. At this point, you have limited options. You could (1) take the trip, (2) cancel only a portion of the trip that would free up the points you can bank and keep the remainder of the trip to either take yourself or try to rent out, or (3) try to rent out the entire trip. I suspect if you chose (2) you would shorten the trip such that others may not be interested in renting it from you.
