when you buy - are your points added to your account on Jan 1 or on your purchase date?

we we waited til the fall (though i think we're just going to purchase next week) does that mean our points wouldn't be available for us until say october 2008? (skipping this years points for a lower fee)

and would that mean if we wanted to take a January trip in 2008 we have no points? so in order to take a Jan trip we would always have to bank our points from last year to take them before our purchase date?

By "added to your account", I'm assuming you mean available to use. If that's the case, they're added to your account on the first day of your UY month.

You can book prior to that time, but the stay has to have a check out date AFTER that first day of the month (assuming you have no points banked and don't want to "borrow" next years points). For example, if you're staying in Jan of '08, you could have booked in Feb of '07, but use the points that will hit in Oct of '07 for that stay.

I'm not sure they offer the "buyback" incentive (skipping 1 years points to lower overall cost) anymore. You'll want to check with your guide.

On the January trip scenario....remember, you can BORROW next years points. So, as long as you're in the system, you COULD borrow the '08 points (assuming there aren't any 07 points) and continue to borrow every year. IF you get '07 points, you have 365 days from your UY month (NOT CALENDER YEAR) to use your points..so a January trip would be using your '07 UY points. In other words, if you have an Oct UY, and are getting '07 points, you actually have until Sept 30, 2008 to use those Oct points (either for a trip or banking...check banking guidlines to see when you can bank what % of points).

WHEN you buy has nothing to do with it. When your USE YEAR is makes the difference. Say you purchase and have a March use year. That means your points are renewed every year on March 1st. You will use those points for reservations (DVC stays) that occur between March 1 and the following February 28/29. Member services will take the points from the correct use year. For example: I have a March use year. I currently have 3 bookings between now and the end of next February. Next month, I can call to make a reservation for next March. That is 11 months ahead if I am making it at my home resort. It "looks" like I don't have those points yet, but when I call and make the ressie, MS will take the points from my 2008 use year, when the new points will be there.

Bear in mind this is hypothetical, because in reality, I will be banking about 110 points yet this year, and because I want to book at my other "new" home resort (AKV), I wont be able to call and make that ressie until May 16 (first day new AKV members are allowed to call).

THere are a lot of "rules" and nuances to get used to with DVC membership. You will understand better after you get all the member information with your purchase.

If you purchase thru Disney directly, you will get points from the current Use Year (possible exception would be AKV which doesn't open until September). With that exception, you would have points available to use immediately and could even make reservations as soon as the deposit has been made. If you purchased a BWV contract today with an October Use Year, you would get current points (from the October, 2006 Use Year) and would also get another allotment of points on October 1, 2007.

With a resale, you would get whatever points remain in the contract as of the purchase date and then would get the next allotment when the Use Year begins.

There is no January Use Year, so no members get points on that date. Points will always be available on the first day of the Use Year, although (as described above) you can always borrow from the next Use Year if more points are needed.

Enjoy!

Kurby, is this your first timeshare purchase, or do you own another more traditional timeshare? Many who own traditional week at a time timeshares have a hard time figuring out the floating point system that DVC has. The good thing about it is that it very flexible in comparrison to those traditional timeshares. You can book any size accommodation at any of the resorts in the "club" from 7 months out. You have a priority booking window at your home resort from 11 months out to 7 months out. You also are not shackled to any specific number of days like traditional timeshares. Many will have a week at a time only. With DVC, you can book 1 day or 3 weeks or e months, or more...provided you have purchased enough points.
