Point Chart question

I'm trying to figure out how many points we need to purchase and am a little confused with the point chart options full week, Friday and Saturday, Sunday thru Thursday.

We normally stay for 10 days - is that still an option with points or do I need to change that to 9 days with a week, plus Friday and Saturday.

The weekly rate is just for convenience (no discount on weekly stays) and is the points necessary for 7 consecutive nights that fall in the same point season. The other point rates are per night. You can book 1 night, 7 nights, 10 nights, or any number of nights that you have points available for.

David's Vacation Club rentals has a calculator where you select you check in and check out dates and it will give you the total points required for the stay. Make sure you click the 'Show Point Amount' button.

Also be aware that DVC can reallocate points that might affect your stay so it's probably a good idea to have just a little cushion. If points go up for some accommodation they have to go down elsewhere to remain at the same overall total for the resort but just something to be aware of so your not caught off guard if it happens. It's not common to be done but the last time caught a lot of people by surprise.

Yes, looking at the points charts for all the different resorts can be a bit mind boggling looking at room types, different seasons or figuring out a stay of less than or more than a week. The best easiest resource when you are not a member is to go on the dvc rental site - davids DVC. it allows you to put in your dates and will populate the points needed for ALL resorts and ALL room types - so you can quickly compare the different resorts. Even as a member i will use it for a quick assessment of points cost. It will also tell you the number of people each room will accommodate, because some studios have a murphy bed and will accommodate 5, then you have some 1 bedrooms (I think BC and BW) that accommodate 5, but when you take a closer look you need to bring bedding (air mattress and sheets) to have somewhere for the 5th person to sleep.

Once you are a member you can easily look at availability and points cost, but Davids is my go to for quick planning and comparing.

As another poster mentioned there is the possibility that DVC will reallocate points (they recently did this with SSR with creating a different room category), so to kind of hedge being caught without enough points people will often suggest figuing out your room point needs now and add 10%. You certainly do not have to and do have the option of buying 24 one time use points for $15 pp at 7 months if you need a little more. You can always buy more point directly from DVC anytime down the road and if you really need to add on a lot more points, just buy another resale contract.

As noted, points are per day though they could institute a minimum stay up to 5 days, they never have and this wouldn't affect your current plans. Just look through the charts for the different home resorts and see how many points you would likely use. In this situation you'll likely need a small cushion of points, more if looking at lower end in terms of cheaper resort, smaller villa or lower DVC season. Even more if looking at standard view or value. That might be 20-25% or more for a cheap specialty view in a studio Choice or Adventure season. Or it might be none or less than you think you need for a 2 BR Premier. I'd plan resale then a 25 point add on for most people. The only exceptions would be though who already have qualified points and those buying a certain sized contract where it just doesn't make sense, say they need 100 points or less toal. If you judge your needs to be 300 or more, I'd consider buying part now and see how it goes then maybe a second home resort later. It might look something like 150-170 at SSR with a 25 point retail add on then maybe BLT later at 150 points as a single example of many variations.
