We (DH - me, DW, DS9, DD4) went on a walk today - almost 3 miles - in 93 degree heat back home in Texas. Glad we did, for when we go to WDW in late May the average high is 89, and I learned a couple of things today rather than learning them on Main Street in the MK.

1) 93 is hot, especially for a 4 year old.
2) My kids are not use to wearing hats.
3) Bring water bottles so that you can pour water over their heads.
4) Bring bandanas to dry off after #3

I'm sure as you read #1, you gave a great big - duh!!! However, I could see myself on the first day in the Magic Kingdom, only 3 or 4 hours into the trip I have been planning for four months, no, the first real vacation in two years since work has been so incredibly busy, scratch that, the pilgramage I have been planning since the first born was first born, responding to DD4 after she let's out in her best whinning voice, "It's hot, I'm tired" with a, "Are you KIDDING me?! I'm spending $5K on this trip, and by God you are going to have nothing but an awesome great time or I'm gonna...."

Wait...finding my happy place, calming down...........OK, we're back.

Seriously, I started this thread with one question, one comment. In reverse order:

It was a good idea for us to get the family out on some walks to properly set expectations of walking around WDW.

Has anyone ever tracked how much you walked in WDW with a podometer?

:confused3 I have wondered how many miles we clock on a WDW vacation for 6 trips now - really need to buy a podometer!!!

Can I add #5 to your list?

This may seem weird, but check your childrens shorts for proper fit in the leg/crotch area. I have two sons...the look these days is to wear those baggy, long shorts. Fine. Problem with those shorts is that the crotch hangs lower than normal, leaving bare thigh skin to rub together in the hot, humid temperatures = major rash, sores and uncomfortable experience!!! :sad2:

Sorry if that was a bit "too much information"!!! :rotfl2:

I wore a pedometer to our last visit to WDW in January '05. It was before DD was born so it was just us two adults. I think my lowest full day was around 12 miles and my highest was about 18. I averaged around 13-14 though.

This usually included two parks with an afternoon break.

Our next trip will be in November and I'm sure we'll be taking a much slower pace since we'll be pushing a stroller.

Great idea though about getting used to walking first. We didn't before our first visit in '99 and we really regretted it.

I wore a pedometer back on our trip in March. I think I remember averaging about 9-10 miles in Magic Kingdom and about 8 miles in Animal Kingdom, and that was with us leaving the parks mid-afternoon. Epcot I think I did about 12 miles. And if you add in the walking I did the rest of the day, it was even more. I think our Epcot day, I did about 16 miles altogether. This was one of the reasons I was so glad to have the stroller, there's no way my DS could have done that kind of walking.

We went last year (our first time) and spent 1 day in each park, and split the 5th day between 2 parks. My wife wore a pedometer the entire time and logged 44 miles total. The kids' ages were 7 to 10, and they were so engrossed in their surroundings, that they never complained. Much younger than that, and i'm afraid there would have been some friction from them.
