Plus size model on Sports Illustrated cover unhealthy?

2/3's of US citizens are overweight
1/3 are obese
A person's waistline should be no more than half their height. A 60" person's waist should not be larger than 30". Why doesn't SI have normal sized women on their cover? The women have been very thin, except for large breasts, or overweight like Ashley. They're all beautiful but not typical.
As for Cheryl Tiegs, she is 68 years old and I think she looks good. We have all had less than flattering pictures taken, unless some dis posters are flawless?

2/3 + 1/3 = 3/3. So by that logic, all U.S. citizens are either overweight or obese.

If you listen to the Cheryl Tiegs interview, she sounds a bit ... woozy. And the fact that she cites Dr. Oz does not help her credibility.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda.

How many "normal sized" (whatever that is) people smoke? Are Type A? Drug addicted? Workaholic? In unhealthy relationships? Malnourished? Have an eating disorder? Haven't had a physical in 20 years? Have blood pressure and cholesterol readings off the charts? Hate their jobs? Are cheating? Have a mountain of debt? And on and on...

Weight happens to just be something you can see. And certainly there are degrees of overweight, which should be considered in a discussion like this.

To each his own.
Exactly. Bless you Pea-n-Me. :goodvibes

I'm not sure that I agree with this overly simplistic assessment of what a waistline should be, but according to Ashley Graham's IMG Model bio, she is 5'10" with a 30 inch waist. So she meets your criteria, and also meets Dr. Ozs vague criteria that a waist should be less than 35"

Well Cheryl Tiegs and Ashley Graham have something in common. They both don't support obesity, for health reasons. Sigh.

Tiegs is an idiot. The indicator that she is referencing as a health indicator is waist circumference. Has she looked at Ashley's shape? Graham works out regularly and has a waist that I would guess falls in the good range. It is the opposite of the troublesome shape some carry, belly fat whether you weigh a lot or are a decent weight for your height.

Cheryl Tiegs has been put under anesthesia multiple times and had her face, breasts, and whatever else cut. And she is going to start worrying about other people's health? Laughable.

The bottom line is, some people are very uncomfortable with big people being happy, attractive, and confident. And then they mask it as "being concerned" for overweight people.

I have said it before, Ashley Graham is not a poster child for My 600 Pound Life or whatever TLC obese storyline is playing this week. I have true concern over their health. Many won't live to see 50 years old.

But Ashley Graham and millions like her are most likely going to live a long life. You can be overweight, not smoke, exercise regularly and live a long life. Maybe you will only see 87 years old, as opposed to 89 years old. And perhaps people think that glass of red wine, chocolate, and plate of pasta is worth it. Not my concern.

Enjoy life, people! And stop the fake concern over the health of overweight people.

Perfectly said.

Quoted for Truth. I agree completely.

By those standard charts you see in the doctors office, I'm supposed to be 160 pounds. My doctor said if I weighed 160 pounds they'd be really concerned for my health.

Weight is relative. I'm a big person, not so much in the belly, there's some fat there, but it's not unhealthy. I get 2 physicals a year, one for my CDL's and one for my self. Every time the doctor says I am healthy as can be, and it's 2 different doctors.

I'm 100 pounds over what the weight charts say I'm supposed to be, but I have a 17% body fat ratio. I eat right and am extremely active. I'm a diesel mechanic so I'm constantly lifting things that weigh as much as a 5th grader. I have a lot of muscle and muscle is a lot heavier than fat. I average walking 5 miles a day, the soles of my boots will prove this.

You can not base someone's health solely on their waist line. I've seen people that were the spitting image of "healthy" keel over dead at the age of 23, and I've seen "morbidly obese" people live to be 100.

Ashley Graham is young and beautiful and I think that Cheryl Tiegs lady is jealous. She's one of the people who set an unrealistic image of beauty, she's spent numerous hours under the knife trying to maintain it, and then this pretty, young, non stick figure comes out and shows young ladies that you don't have to eat like a mouse or shove your finger down your throat to be beautiful.

To be honest with you, I thought she was in her upper 70's. Wow. All of that plastic surgery, and for what? To look like that?

Well, that "plus size" model on the cover of Sports Illustrated doesn't really look plus sized to me. She looks like a normal healthy woman. All of the other models look anorexic. Cheryl Tiegs can go pound sand for all I care. And Dr. Oz is a quack.

Ronda Rousey looks anorexic?

The facts are that being overweight is unhealthy. Many people think the model is overweight, many people do not think she's overweight.

I think Tiegs' concern might stem from the fact that the magazine is putting a beautiful person on their cover, who happens to be overweight, might send a signal to people that being overweight is okay.

It kind of goes along the lines of advertisements for cigarettes. Studies found that glamorizing an unhealthy behavior (smoking) with slick ads changed people's opinion about an unhealthy behavior.

As much as you give people the facts, what you put in their face everyday on ads, TV, etc, makes an impression.

I personally don't know if I care or not if we are making fat "acceptable." I also don't agree that it's healthy to post stick figure women as the healthy example either.

I don't see that at all. I see a plus size model on the cover as being a sign of modern times and acceptance. I am plus size and consider her beautiful. My hubby is a string bean and his bloodwork is way worse than mine.

Hey! She cited Dr. Oz! You know he used to be on Oprah and now has HIS OWN SHOW! ;-)

and every show that he presents has a new found way to lose weight, just like those magazines you read at the checkout counter.

There are many things that can make a person unhealthy.

Cheryl Tiegs' face actually scared me. She looks like a ventriloquist's doll. Seriously.

Someone should tell her plastic surgery is unhealthy.

ETA ok I got my plastic surgeries mixed up. I can't keep them straight anymore. :p

But the sentiment is the same.

It was Kathie Lee Gifford who, to me, looked like the ventrioloquist's doll.

Cheryl Tiegs, however, does not look good, either. :(

I wish these people would just stop with the plastic surgery. It seems sort of pathetic. You can age naturally and still be beautiful. This is not beautiful. It's not just older people, either. Younger people are ruining their faces, too. (Kate Hudson, what's the other one's name who used to date Jim Carrey)

Sorry for the sort of OT rant. But for these people to say that someone like the model in the OP is unhealthy is just really hypocritical, IMO.

Is it Jenny McCarthy who dated Jim Carrey? Her face looks scary.

It was my impression that Cheryl Tiegs had not had any plastic surgery. But I can't tell. I can't see any traces of it in her photos. If so, then on one hand we criticize older actresses that get it but then say how awful they look when they don't have anything done. She has a face full of wrinkles, sagging eyes, and a sagging jawline. She would not have any of that if she got work done.

Right, I didn't say it was. We don't know that she's not healthy, though.
You said the models should be like "normal sized" women, not that they should be healthy.

But the discussion is not about Ashley personally nor her health.

The discussion is about glamorizing or trying to make it seem "ok" to be overweight. Facts and statistics show that leading a life being overweight contributes to and raises the risk for many diseases. It is but ONE factor, yes. But it is a factor. No one is saying that you can't get sick when you're thin. And people have been pretty vocal over the years about the advertising industry going in reverse and showing unrealistic, thin body types which tend to cause body image issues. Tiegs is just stating that fat acceptance can also cause people to not think about health aspects of being overweight. Personally, I'm not saying that she shouldn't be on the cover. Frankly, I like seeing more of a representation out there, but I get what she's trying to say.
