Ack! We're flying out of NY at 7am tomorrow to go to Key Marathon for a week. dh and ds6 will be fishing on private charter boats dh has arranged. DS has turned into an avid little fisherman over the past year, and he's been beside himself excited! DD8 and I will chill on the beach and visit the sea turtle rescue hospital next door to our resort.
Yesterday, I saw ds at lunch at school, he was 100% fine. I get a call an hour later from the nurse, he's got a fever and his head hurts. DH picks up ds, secretary tells dh 8 kids went home yesterday w/ this. DS was crying w/ dh that his head hurt so much... dh gives him motrin, ds naps for a half hour, and wakes up as if he were never sick. We then go to the ped. last night, he says its going around, it's a flu-like virus and his fever would get worse overnight (we all got our flu shots, so i'm hoping it won't be AS bad as the flu)... all last night, ds had 104 - 105 temp, and threw up twice (after I gave him motrin, then tried tylenol a few hours later, threw up both). He's feeling like cr@p this morning, and his temp is around 103. I had told the ped. we were going to florida saturday, and he said ds 'should' be fine. But now i'm thinking about dd8 getting this while we're down there. Ped. said he was more concerned w/ dd8 catching this... her history is she used to get seizures w/ 106 fevers, but she hasn't had a seizure in 4 1/2 years, and she hasn't had a fever over 103 since then either. So i'm concerned, but not, knim??? DS usually doesn't get high fevers like this either, so i'm thinking it's a BAD virus, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it (how high his fever is).
I am calling the ped when they open this morning to speak to this doc who saw him yesterday to let him know how high the fever was (this was an ear temp), and to ask again if he thinks it's ok we go.
wwyd?????? I used to be VERY neurotic about illnesses because of dd (her first seizure lasted an hour and I thought she died in my arms) and she'd get illnesses like this all the time w/ 106 fevers - lots of rushing to the ER w/ her. makes a mom crazy (or at least it made me crazy... i've talked to other moms of seizure kids and they never seemed as neurotic as I felt). But her health has been great since her last episide, was was just before she turned 4yo. I just don't want my past anxiety over dd's health to get in the way of life today. So I'm just wondering what others might think about doing in my situation.
I tried to look on jetblue's site to see if I could get a flight on sunday, but i can't see seats before actually purchasing, so i can't see if we could sit w/ the kids, and I wouldn't want to sit them alone (us 4 scattered around the plane). I know when i booked the flight a month ago, there weren't many seats left on this flight. AND i'm thinking dd could get this virus sat, and we won't want to leave sunday then anyway.
So I think we'd either go tomorrow as planned if ds is somewhat up to it (he's a real little trooper and would be ok on the plane, etc, even if he wasn't feeling his best), and we just deal down there if dd gets sick. I looked up hospitals in Marathon, and there is one there, just in case for dd. With so many kids having this at school, it's highly contagious (and the ped said so too), but I hate to live around the 'possibility' of dd getting a virus, cancel the trip, and her NOT get sick, ds be totally fine by saturday afternoon, and we cancelled and we're sitting home in NY.
what to do... what to do...............
