Why does voicemail have so many instructions? First I have to listen to the person give me their own personal info. Which consists of earth shattering information such as the fact that they can't answer right now. Then I have to listen to the phone company's recorded instructions on how to use a voicemail system.

Talk after the beep!!! I get it!!!

Thanks for letting me vent.

I swear its to keep you on the phone longer so your mins are eaten up faster.
I also think they are a PITA

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. Is there any way to bypass it??

If you learn one please share!!! I make lots of phone calls at work and I think the whole voicemail thing wastes so much of my time.

Found this online about cell phones (were you talking about cell phones??):

It seems like it takes forever to be able to leave a voicemail message these days. Youneed to wait and hear how long the person will be out, or how many meetings they have that day.
Although some information may be important, like when that person may be back from a week long vacation, most is not that crucial and is too long.

If I know the carrier of the person I am calling I will push the button that will bypass their message. Since I am on Cingular/AT&T, I actually tell people to push 1 to bypass my message, unless I am on an extended absence.
Here is the list of Voicemail bypass of the major carriers. Regional carriers and MVNOs may be found on their respective sites.
Voicemail Greeting Bypass
Cingular/AT&T push 1
Verizon push *
Sprint push 1
T-Mobile push #
Note: This may actually waste more time if you are not sure of the caller’s carrier. If you hit the wrong button, you will not be able to leave a message and will prompt you to leave a paging #.

I just tried it when I called DH's cell phone, and as soon as his voicemail picked up, I pressed "*" and could immediately leave a message. Amen! At least when I call him and all the kids...which is who I primarily call...I can do that.

I always wondered about this. I'm going to try this. I hope it works for me.

This is why I no longer leave messages - annoying!

Thanks to the PP who posted the bypass info. I'm going to try that next time.

OK, now that I re-read the OP, I don't think you're talking about cell phones. But, if that info helped anyone, :thumbsup2.

Now that I'm thinking about it tho...I need to find out if I can bypass my DH's voicemail information at work. As soon as the company recording picks up, I put in his extension before it asks, and then if he doesn't pick up and the recording starts to tell me he's not available, I know I can press "1" to leave a message, but then it comes back and goes through the whole speech about "You have reached ______________ voicemail" (duh, that's why I pressed "1") and then it goes on to explain how to leave a message. I've got to work on this. ::yes::

Well, I'm talking about all voicemail I think. Home phones, cell phones, work phones. They're all different, but they all take too long to get to the message leaving part!

I think I will use the info for bypassing the message if I know who I'm calling and what their carrier is, so thanks for that! Most of the time though, if I'm calling friends and family, I just figure they will see I called and call me back. I almost never leave a personal message, just lots of messages from work.
