So many, ourselves here on the DIS, in our real lives, our families, our friends, co-workers, everywhere, have been touched by this disease, breast cancer. I know of many here on the DIS, directly touched, themselves, their families. Some are current survivors, in remission, as is my wife, Marie, Lady M. Others are in treatment, making headway, progress towards remission,
and still others have passed. <img width=30 src=http://www.dmurphydis2.com/Misc/sylvia3.gif>

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Do yourself a favor. I know, sounds cliché, but so true. If you have never had a mammogram, schedule one, this month. If you have had in the past, and more than a year, get this years scheduled, now, this month. Yeah, it's a pain, not comfortable (though many say a lot less than anticipated), time out of the day, waiting for the results, maybe a bit worried in the wait too. But so worth it if something is amiss, and so comforting if nothing is. It is treatable, you can save a life, maybe yours, a family member, a friend.

Those who have been touched by breast cancer, themselves, family, friends, maybe if you could share a thought here, to encourage others. We need to help others remain healthy. Go yourself, encourage a family member, we can help make it a wonderful world for so many.

What a wonderful world.

Thanks Dan. Our neighbor is a survivor of breast cancer and I have had many friends and neighbors affected by cancer. Also, Yoplait yogurt is giving money towards breast cancer awareness for lids that you send in that has the pink ribbon, so that's another way to contribute.

::yes:: Please do schedule a mammogram. My sister was 32 when she found a lump by accident. It goes to show you are never too young. (Luckly it turned out to be nothing more than a fatty tumor. But at least she had it checked, and because she did find a lump the doctor told her she would have to be more aware of her breast from now on).

This is great Dan. Thank you for posting it.

I think all women over age 18 should have at least an annual mammogram. The sooner you find out, the better your chances are of fighting off this terrible disease.

My aunt is going in for a double masectomy on the 5th. This is her second bout with breast cancer. She had another tumor 10 years ago. She has a very upbeat attitude and is deterimed to fight. My grandmother is also a breast cancer survivor. These woman are so strong and brave and I admire them greatly. Both are alive today because of early detection.

Most of you know I am going to be 28 in a month. Well, several years ago, I was going in for a routine exam when my doctor found a lump in my breast. Thankfully, it turned out to be nothing serious. But it really opened my eyes that breast cancer can and does strike women of all ages.

Please, please have a mammogram if you have not done so this year already.

Thank you, Dan, again for posting this. I missed it last night but I want to bump it up. This is so important.

And Lady M - stay strong.

As my Grandmother is a breast cancer survivor, I am well aware of this horrible disease. She never did her self-exams, and it was not until her yearly check-up that the lumps were discovered. We feel that if she had done the self-exams, she would have found it much sooner and saved herself from all she had to go through. So I not only say get your mammogram, but make sure you are doing those monthly exams yourself!!!!

ITA ::yes::

I can not stress enough - the sooner you find out, the better the chances of fighting it.

I knew you'd post a reminder about this today. ::yes:: 1:35 AM, huh?? Do you EVER sleep Mr. Murphy?? ;) You wasted to time with this reminder!! :bounce:

A very important month indeed. Get those mammograms!

My favorite song Dan!!

Thanks for the reminder, I hope every woman who sees this gets a mammogram or at least does a self exam.

Wishing everyone a "magical" day!!

As I mentioned in Monkeyboy's thread about Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I know 4 other woman online who have had potential problems in this area in the past month and I'm number 5.

In my case, it is a solid mass found on a routine mammogram. Neither I, nor my health care provider could feel the lump. Mammograms work-- but only if you get them! Annual mammograms are recommended for all woman 40 years and over, but few get them. :(

I'm glad I did, regardless of the outcome of my biopsy.

Last year in Oct I was just starting my chemo tx. for breast cancer and thought to myself how funny to be starting it in the month of breast cancer awareness. Now I found my lump by self exam and it didn't show up on the mamo they did after I found the lump so please do both because you just never know.

I've surrived 6 months of chem and 1 month of rad. My hair has grown back and most of my strength has return. Almost feel like a human being again.

So please I'm hoping everyone gets there mamo and husbands remind your wives.

It happening to more and more women everyday. It is such a UGLY disease and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy

OOPS! Made a boo-boo!! You caught me Dan! It took me 3 times reading your reply to figure out what you were talking about..............I think my brain is fried at the moment!! :earseek:

Yes, it took you NO time in reminding the ladies here what month it is!! :p

Read the reply to your post in What kind of diser are you?
Thanks for reminding us about the Month !
HAve a disney day:earsgirl: :earsboy:

Thanks Dan!
Perfect song to go with your thread!

As you know, I' ve battled this disease for the past year also.

It can't be said enough: your chances are, indeed, much better if you catch breast cancer at it's earliest stage, before it has had a chance to spread. Your best shot at doing this is with annual mammograms and clinical exams (by a medical professional) and monthly Breast Self Exams (5 days after your period for those of you still menstruating). So please, do yourself and all your loved ones a favor: DON'T PUT IT OFF!!! Early detection can save your life!!!

Rutt and Tuke: I hope your biopsy results are negative - you'll be in my prayers...

PigletsPal: Your post gave me chills because I could have written it. I'm glad we both made it through treatment and may we each have continued good health for many, many years to come.

Dan, I'm glad Marie has done so well. She's blessed to have such an awesome husband!

Thanks, Dan. I needed the reminder. It's been 2 years. Thankfully, there is no history of any type of cancer in my family. I don't want to be the first. I'll make my appointment tomorrow.

P.S. My mother-in-law is a survivor, too. Give Marie a

Thanks Dan, this is so important.
Fav song, too :)
I had mine done in June.

My DIL Colleen(Ryan'sMom) is having a biopsy done Oct. 21st.
because of a density found on Mammogram.
She was sent because of a routine GYN exam and discharge from other Breast.
She just turned 31and had Breast reduction surgery 3yrs. ago.
We are hoping and praying this is just scar tissue.
No Family history that we know of.
She is such a wonderful mommy and a loving, giving, selfless person. I love her like a daughter.

Hugs to my fellow survivors Pea- n-Me & PigletsPal and all fellow DISners affected by this disease.
Sending positive thoughts for your biopsy Rutt n Tutt, Hugs-
the waiting is very hard.

Dan, give my warmest regards to Marie.

I still have two cousins in their 50's who have never gotten a mammogram!
I send them notes and remind them that there was no history in our family before I had it .

BSE's are so important- if you feel something is just not right-please don't wait, get it checked out fast.
Please get a baseline by the age of 40, or at 35 if there is a family history.

Hugs, Pixie Dust, prayers, positive thoughts to all fighting this beast esp. right now to Peggie and as always TigerFan.
May they find a way to eradicate all cancer soon.
