Thank you Dan
I was very touched to come home to your link to this thread.
and by the kindness and condolences of
all you lovely people here.
Reminding me again what a wonderful family we have here.

I am drained from a very emotional five days,
staying at my parents house with my father, comforting him,
my brother who came in from Atlanta, his family coming in from Boston,
my nephew coming in from New Mexico and many other relatives,
and friends I hadn't seen for awhile.

We all knew in our heads it was a Blessing for my mother,
but in our hearts
we were mourning her loss a second time.

My mother loved her children and grandchildren
unconditionally, and without favoritism.
My mother belonged to many organizations
Past President of the ladies Auxiliary of the VFW,
the Democratic Club, the Golden Age club
My father had been Pres. of the American Legion
and belonged to the Elks,
They loved to dance at all these Clubs affairs
So many people came to pay their respects.

But, because there were so many people,
I felt I had no time alone to say my goodbyes.
On the last night of the wake which was my mom's
birthday,I asked the funeral director if I could stay
after the others had left.
They were very accommodating.
I then told my sister and brother and
the grandchildren what I intended.
I had brought a music box that I had given my mother
many years ago
just before she was to undergo Cataract surgery.
At that time,I told her not to be frightened ;
that she might not be able to see right away,
but she would still be able to hear the music.

It was an Italian organ grinder and it played "Santa Lucia."
This was a song she sang to us all as children ,
while lightly caressing our foreheads,
to soothe us when ill, to comfort us, as a lullaby to put us to sleep at night.
She carried this tradition thru to her seven grandchildren as well.
I thought it fitting to play this and sing her to her final rest.

They all agreed they wanted to stay also.
While,as you can imagine how emotional this was for us all,
it was very cathartic,
We cried,hugged and reminisced together
Just her three children and their children.
I think it was especially helpful for the grandsons,
who had been holding their feelings in for four days.

The Funeral services at the Church were lovely and they also played "Santa Lucia" .
Her grandchildren, a nephew, and a great nephew were honorary Pallbearers.

At the beautiful stained glass Chapel at the Mausoleum ,
which would be her final resting place, the priest asked
if anyone would like to say a few words.

My youngest son,Jason, came up and gave the most beautiful eulogy and tribute to his grandma we had ever heard.
My Niece, the oldest grandchild spoke next ,and then my oldest son,Glenn spoke.
They all agreed that Jason put into words so eloquently
their memories of grandma exactly.
It was very moving.
She will live on in our hearts and memories.

Thank you all again for your kindness.

Sincerely, Marilyn
