I am finally about to buy a new digital camera. Our current camera is a Nikon Coolpix 5600 and I hate it. It takes a pretty good picture, but the delay between pictures is forever and I often miss the shot. A friend recently sent me some pictures and they were so awesome that I asked her what kind of camera she had. It is a Nikon D40. I went to take a look at it, and it's HUGE! I'd like to get something that won't be so big to carry around, but I also want a great shot and to be able to take picture a second after the first one. I am really unknowledgeable when it comes to cameras, so I was hoping you experts could help me. TIA

you may want to look into the canon S3 or the S5 both are thought of as bridge P&S cameras and both are pretty light weight they are larger than your average p&s but not as big as a SLR camera. there is a thread here for these cameras if you want to see some pics from them and both as well as many others have multi shot options these days

I am looking into an SLR. For portability I use a Fuji F40. It is a P&S camera that offers stunning images.

Check out dpreview.com to compare various cameras. For P&S I recommend the Panasonic TZ3. It's about $319 at Costco. Panasonic has one of the best optical image stabilization systems. There was really no shutter lag at all compared to my previous Oly 770 4mp camera, and it took great low light photos, and photos while I was moving in a bus, in auto mode.

Here's one I took on the freeway, from one side of the bus through the window on the other side, zoomed in to show part of the Great Wall of China. The windows were tinted and the day was overcast and smoggy down to the ground.

Here's one of Chinese acrobats in motion in a darkened theatre:

The stage was completely dark in this one save for a few red lights to highlight performers:

The D40 is actually pretty darn tiny for a DSLR. :lmao:

The reason the pictures are so good is that a DSLR has a sensor inside that's about 15x bigger than the sensor in most point-n-shoot cameras. But a bigger sensor requires a bigger camera.
