Okay, I know, member since 2002 and a little over 100 posts. I like to read more than post. Truth be told, by the time I think of an answer to some of your posts it has already been posted about 12 twelves times. So I read and enjoy and post every so often when the mood takes me. I guess you could say I'm a "lurker", but I rrrreeeeaaaallllllyyyyy hate that word. It just sounds so WRONG!! So I sit here ready for a pre trip listening to hours of downloaded Disney music and hoping that I will manage to be halfway witty. Who am I, you ask? My name is Roy a Disney Fanatic and father of a DS(9) and husband of "Elemusing" a DIS veteran who is as fanatical as I and (knowing her) will put in an appearance on this Trip Report at some juncture. We have been married for 11 years and had a wonderful Disney honeymoon. We started bringing DS when he was three and have brought him nearly every year since. Why no trip reports before this one? Well, that is kind of a long story, so if you will bear with me I will tell it.

We have been to Disney many, many times in the past and I've never really felt the need to post a trip report. Like I stated above, you guys are very articulate and keep records much better than I do. You promptly reply to posts and have excellent communication with your readers. While I enjoy reading and occasionally posting I'm generally way to busy to check up on posts by the hour, or have the patience to answer every question. I greatly admire those who can and do, I'm just not sure I'm one of them. BUT, then we came to October 2006. October was an okay month until the last week. We had tickets to see "The Lion King" in Nashville, TN (we live in Murray, KY) and were very excited about that. Our two dogs "Baby" and "Buddy" were going to stay home and guard the house for us. Now little Buddy has had a hard life. He is a minature Pomeranian (as is Baby) and he was the runt of the litter. He developed a cyst in his neck at a couple of months old. Developed epilepsy when he was one and began to lose his hair at age 9. He lost his sight at age 10 and always had trouble with staph infections. Despite all his medical problems he was the happiest little dog you have ever seen. He loved EVERYONE! He used to give me "The Rub". While I was laying in my chair, he would stand on my chest and rub his face across one side of my cheek and then the other. Just like a cat. Very cute!

Baby, Me, and little Buddy!

A couple of days before we left, Buddy, who was 11 at the time, became very ill. It wasn't the throwing up kind of sick, he seemed to lose all his energy. He couldn't stand very well and you literally had to carry him outside for potty breaks. We went ahead and went to see "The Lion King" and had the MIL come over and check on Buddy.

Nicolas' First Coke! Heading to see "The Lion King".

But by the next week things didn't look good. He just wasn't getting any better. He wasn't in any pain and he would eat if you brought food to him. He was going potty okay, he just didn't have any energy. I went to work on September 11th kind of dreading the day. Not because I really expected something to happen, it's just that this day has sucked ever since 2001 and it is a depressing day. About 10am my stomach began to hurt. By noon it had slipped a little lower and I felt as if I had been kicked in the man parts by a giant wearing steel shoes. By 2pm I was throwing up and in a pretty serious amount of pain. I went home and tried a hot bath and it seemed to help for a couple of minutes. When my DW came home at 4, I asked her to take me to the emergency room which really scared her because like most men I would rather suffer than actually go to a place that may help. I was bleeding pretty well at this point (I think most of you get the picture) and was pretty sure I was about to die. We go to the ER and find out I have a kidney stone, ya-hoo just what I always wanted. They dope me up and recommend I stay at the hospital. NO WAY! DW brings me home and I crash into a painless, mindless sleep. Even in my drug induced state, I get little Buddy from his day spot and bring him to bed with me. Everything is great until 11:00pm when I wake out of a solid sleep to realize that little Buddy isn't breathing any longer. He laid in his favorite spot (behind my legs) and went to sleep and never woke up. I'm one of those weird people who love their dogs like children. They mean a whole lot to me. But I also think God works in mysterious ways. That kidney stone (actually two, I'll get to that) helped distract me from facing the full force of my grief. For the next four months I would end up having six surgeries (I had a kidney stone on each side, each one about 9 mm, which really stinks!). All of that helped keep my mind from focusing to much on little Buddys loss. About the time I was getting better my Father in Law was getting sick. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and they had gotten the cancer, but had killed his immune system and EVERYTHING made him sick. He was constantly in and out of the hospital. In February of 2007 he went in with pnemonia. Every time they would get him stable, something else would go wrong. He was in the hospital for three months. They just couldn't seem to keep up with the way his body was failing. They would fix one thing and the next would fail. Just a constant battle and you could see that he was losing. He just couldn't keep up and in April he died. We were devestated. There were few men in the world as good as my FIL. Words can't describe the loss.

So, with the last six months being as difficult as they were we decided that a trip to the all time champion of soul lifting, Mickey Mouse, was in order. We take a trip to see Mickey nearly every year. So a trip in and of itself wasn't odd. But this trip is really, really needed. We need something that will make this year seem halfway decent. This year has sucked! I hate to say it so bluntly, but there really is no other way to say it. Please, Mickey, HELP US!

First we checked the money. The year has been tight. With extra medical bills and such we would need to be careful. We normally go and splurge for the one week a year. This year would have to be a little different. We had enough to DRIVE (about 14 hours) and stay at the AKL, OR we could FLY (my preference) and stay at the CBR. My DW has been dying to stay to the AKL, but I really hate the drive. It is hard to have a vacation where you spend the beginning and end of it driving for an entire day! I would rather fly and save a few hours. Yes, the hassle can be Fun (note the sarcasm), but I enjoy flying. After a little conversation I gave my DW the choice. Whatever you choose. She emailed later saying she had booked the flights and CBR (Thank God!). BUT, now she says I owe her (Uh-Oh), not sure what that means but it sounds bad for me!

Elemusing dancing with joy!

So now it is time. The real planning begins. What ADR's do we want. Do we have the new copy of the Unofficial Guide? Yes we do. What rides do we want to put on our schedule? Water Park or Disney Quest? What? The Teppanyaki grill will be closed? AAaarrgggghhhh. I love that place. My DS said this morning, "Dad, we have to ride Mission Space. I'm ALL About that ride". Where does a nine year old learn he's "all about" anything? Okay, I'll put it on the list. We make detailed cards that we laminate and everyone gets a copy. That way we know EXACTLY what rides and what times. I don't think we have EVER waited more than 10 minutes on any ride (not counting break downs). My DW just puts together a very good schedule!

So, the last six months have been hard. Here is an opportunity to make things at least tolerable again. They say it is "The Year of a Million Dreams" and we sure hope it is. So many things still have to be planned (like do we board Baby who is 14 and while she is in good health I don't think boarding will be good for her).

Baby in Christmas garb.

If you want to find out what happens you will just have to keep reading. I really hope you do come along. I've gotten so much joy out of reading yours and I want to return that. Don't worry the rest won't be as depressing as the first part. You just needed to know where we were coming from. Come on aboard and let's see if we can't make it better!

Wow, I am the first to comment on your TR, I guess that means I should get back to work! He he. I am really enjoying it so far, you have a great way of writing! I know how you feel about treating your pets like children. We had a doberman that my dad rescued when we were little. He passed away tragically, I won't get into it, but I think that was one of the only times I ever saw my dad cry. I have a cat, his name is Tigger, and I swear he is more of dog than a cat. Seriously, he acts like a dog. I love him soooo much, I call him my son. It's good to know with all the animal cruelty in the world, there are people out there who do love animals. Sorry for all the upset your family has had to deal with the last year. I know for us it always seems that we go through a bunch of bad times, then it just seems to start getting better, and then BAM, we get hit with something else, so I know how you feel. I hope this trip turns out to be a really magical for you and your family.:goodvibes

Your Pre TR has brought me to tears. I am sorry to hear of your FIL passing and your medical problems as well, where as I cannot really relate to that my heart does go out to you and your family. I can relate to losing a beloved pet, I love my animals as if they were my children too. We lost our German Shepherd Max when he was around 2 years old. He was poisoned by a neighbor, and unless you see the animal ingest the poison by the time the symptoms show it is too late. I am so sorry that your Buddy has passed. I have tried to replace Max, and where as my new little ones have created a new place in my heart, they are not able to fill the emptiness that Max has left. From the way you speak of your pets I know you gave Buddy a great life and he probably drew his last breath knowing that you loved him so.
I want you and your family to have the best Disney trip ever! I am on board for pre and post Trip, I can't wait to read about your plans and the magic you receive. :)

Ok, I'm hooked, can't wait to read more.

So sorry about Buddy. We are also the kind of people who treat their dogs like people. I know how hard it can be.

Thank you for the post! First one! Yah!

Funny how important animals become to you. I think it is the fact that they are so reliant on you that they become a big part of you. I woke up for months at 6:00am ready to give Buddy his medicine (for the seizures). My DW was walking through the house a week ago looking for him. It is crazy sometimes! Isn't it also funny how each animal has their own traits that make them so special! I think I would actually enjoy a cat that acts like a dog. I think its the fact that they act like cats that makes it so hard for some people to enjoy them. I love them when they are kitties though! I really don't mind cats (just don't tell my DW! ha).

Thanks for your comments and for reading!

I had quite a few people tell me to get another dog immediately. We couldn't do that for two reasons. One, Baby is 14 years old and doensn't do well with new puppies (we've tried). And two, I just felt to hurt to try and get another. I don't know what I'll do if something happens to Baby, but it won't be pretty. I don't know if I can get another after all of that. We gained another dog, a Sheltie named Mac (10 years old) when my FIL passed. He is a really good dog! Dumb as a rock but very lovable.

36552000_0011-med.jpg
Mac

He is so funny! My FIL asked my DS Nicolas to watch him if something happened to him, so Mac means a lot to us!

Thanks for reading. I appreciate your comments!

So sorry about Buddy. We are also the kind of people who treat their dogs like people. I know how hard it can be.

I love the number of people that are DISSERS who are animal people! People who love Mickey seem to have a softer heart for animals. God bless us all!

Thanks for coming on board!

Up next, pre-planning and PACKING. (aaaarrrrrggggghhhhh!)

Count me in for the ride too!

We lost our beloved schnauzer last summer and my girls still cry for him. We did get another schnauzer but how can you ever really replace someone who has been such an important part of your life? We will make new memories with Louis (our sassy new boy) but will always miss Kodie!

I am looking forward to hearing more about your trip popcorn::

Can't be done! Nothing can replace that exact feeling. You are absolutely correct! Thanks for the comments.

All Right. So here is where we are at.....

We booked one month in advance on the button. Talk about your pre-planning. We had talked about booking earlier in the year, but with my FIL in and out of the hospital we didn't know if we were going to be able to go. ALSO, we were actually supposed to take a trip to Washington, D.C. with my parents and sisters, but due to massive disfunction with my sisters that plan was put off for another year (waynother story). Again, God was looking out for us, I don't think that trip would have worked out this year anyway. So, exactly 30 days to go before we leave for Disney. In a way I'm a little bit disappointed.....The build up, the anticipation, the waiting, they are all part of the fun and magic of a Disney trip. I'm going to have to compress all those feelings into a month......boy, are DW and DS going to be in trouble!

First off the important stuff.
36552101_0074.JPG
The Unofficial Guide - Our Disney Bible.

Yep, have to have the Unofficial Guide. We have used this book since our very first trip and have used it on every trip since. Gotta have it! DW has even been quoted in it!

Some other trip usefuls.

Various Vacation Items

DW gets excited about vacation each time we go and so we always end up taking various items that are not on the normal vacation packing list. Here are individual fans for each of us and a water ball/racket game for DS and I in the pool. I can picture it in my mind already! DS is going to whack someone really good with that thing. It is not a matter of if, only a matter of when! I love that boy dearly, but God really didn't want him playing sports! He can read two or three grades above his level and he can play the viola beautifully, but put a racket in his hand and people start running. I'll get them out to play when we get there just to see what kind of fun can be had. I just hope no one (including me) gets hurt! What is it about vacation that makes us buy a bunch of stuff that we don't need and probably won't use? Whenever we get ready to leave I go to the miniature aisle at the store and stock up on a bunch of miniature shampoos, soaps, toothpastes, etc... Every year when we get back I end up packing a drawer full of left over miniatures and do we use the ones left over for next year. NO! We go to the store and buy a bunch of miniatures that we are going to put into a drawer later. I don't even know what is wrong with using our regular size stuff. As much as we pack, their extra size difference isn't really going to effect the over all size of our suitcases anyway. There is just something about those minis..........

Another needed item for a trip to Disney....

Disney Crocs!

I actually took this picture last night at my home. It looks like a catalog picture does it not? My DW got these for me for Christmas. Of course the funny part of the story is that she bought HERSELF two pair. The black with red bands you see before you, and the red with black bands that I didn't get a picture of. It just struck me as wrong that she would buy me a Christmas present just so she could get the same thing. She didn't buy them for me because I wanted them, she bought them because SHE wanted them. I'm probably preaching to the choir here. Most of you wonderful ladies are probably wondering what I'm grousing about. Do any of the guys understand? It would be like me buying her the movie "Armegeddon" so I could watch it. Or buying her a vacuum cleaner or cook ware for Christmas (which I have learned is a no-no). That is another thing that always strikes me as funny. Buy a guy a drill for Christmas and he is happy as a clam in water, even if he has to fix the house with it. Buy a woman a vacuum cleaner for christmas and you have made a mistake. Nothing that you have to use to work on the house (or supply for the house, or cook for the house, etc) is acceptable on holidays. Unfortunately I have learned this lesson the hard way.

One more thing you need for a Disney trip.......
36552101_0070.JPG
Dancin' Shoes!

That's right! Your Dancin' Shoes!!!

We're going to Disney.
We're going to Disney.
We're going to Disney.
We're going to Disney.

All right. Now the planning truly begins. Tag along as our friends plan their ADR's. Watch them as they map out their whole vacation! Listen in as they beg and weedle with the nine year old to ride Tower of Terror and Rock n Roller Coaster because Mom and Dad have NOT ridden it together in 6 years and we would really like to do it together this year.

More to come............

First of all, you LOVE those shoes. Yes you do - don't argue with me. And yes, your picture looks like a catalog picture - very good.

You forgot to mention that you became a youth minister after several year of becoming the children's minster and that is about to drive us both over the edge. And you forgot to mention the new house that the neighbors are building practically in our yard - WAYYYYY too close. So we HAVE to get out of here! Florida here we come!!!

yippeeeeee!!! I plan to make out touring schedule tonight based on the UG plans. For those of you who don't have this - go out and buy it right now. It is amazing. We are doing less PS's or Advance Reservations this year than in the past. We are going to try out the Whispering Canyon at Wilderness Lodge and we always have to do the Garden Grill. LOVE that place! yummmmmyyyy.

DS's hair and beard are going to be so bushy and long from trying to encourage our girls to grow out their hair for our Locks of Love project that the people at WDW are going to think I am traveling with a lumberjack. I may ask him to dress in flannel when we check in and sing the lumberjakc song from Monty Python. I'm a lumberjack and I'm ok - I works all night and I sleeps all day . . .

I love the start of your trip report! I'm sorry for your losses early in the year.

We too are dog people and they too are like children to us. My family has had the same cocker spaniel for 15 years now since I was a girl still living with them and we are all dreading the emotional day when he passes.

I love the unofficial guide! Reading that book is how I found disboards!

Can't wait to hear about the CBR and I can't wait to hear the vacation details!

Thanks for the sentiment and the comments!

What a rough year you've had! I have a little Chihuahua mix who is as much a part of my family as my children. In February, I almost lost him to kidney failure. About a month later, they announced the dog food recall and his food had been one of the 1st to be recalled. It was so heartbreaking for me to think he almost died due to something I fed him. He's on a prescription diet now and doing well, but it was such a terrifying time for me. My heart goes to you for the loss of your Buddy.

Can't wait to read more! I'm really enjoy this report!

I am really enjoying your planning. I ususally plan my trips months in advance and make ADRs for every day with a minute by minute itenerary. Two weeks ago I got and itch to take those two boys of mine to Disney World. I decided the three of us just needed a break. Don't tell the 5 year old princess cause she's not going. She had a solo trip in December so do not throw too many flames. I just think the boys need a trip that is about them. So anyway, the point was I can relate to having to cram so much anticipation in just a short time. The plan was to write my own pretrippie this morning. I even got up at 5 a.m. to do so! Instead I have gotten hooked on yours and Lil Kim's reports!

I am sorry about your Buddy. As I was reading my own little guy, Bones snuggled up in my lap. It made my heart yearn for you a little more. As far as Father In Law goes, I can not even fathom the loss of a parent. I am sorry for that loss.:grouphug: Now the kidney stone--I too can relate. I had to lol because when I had one I too went in to take a bath! Isn't it funny that we think a bath is gonna cure a hurt like that! I have worked in emergency rooms for almost 20 years too!

I hope you have a great time on this trip. If you want a fairy godmailer, I will be there next week.

Sorry about your losses this year :( Sounds like a Disney fix is definitely in order. My two DS have the same crocs as you ;) We think Locks of Love is wonderful - DD has donated twice but now that she is a teenager, she's having a harder time growing her hair out - it annoys her when it gets too long.

We'll be at POR while you're at CBR - maybe we'll pass at a park or something :)

I am on board!! I only got part way through but will be back to read more. I am very sorry for your losses also. My parents had a Sheltie and he passed away 3 yrs ago but somedays things happen that make you think of them. Then last year my mom's baby (half Doberman half black lab) got sick out of the blue and we had to put her to sleep. That was very sad since we didn't expect it...so I feel for ya. Dogs really do become part of the family! I am also very sorry about the loss of your FIL.

Well I can't wait to finish catching up and to read the following installments!!!!

Wasn't that crazy. We had to throw out tons of canned and packaged food because of the recall. We regularly feed them Kibbles and Bits and occasionally give them the canned. But I like to load up on the canned and now I'm afraid to buy any of it!

Thanks for the comments!

Don't your pets have a way of worming a big huge hole in your heart? Today we went and were trying to pick out recliners and we had to reject half of them because they didn't have a space on the foot rest for Baby to lay.

Kidney stones, bbbllleeecccchhhh. I've broken arms and legs and haven't been in as much pain as I was with the kidney stone. So we are connected by the pain of the kidney. We should start a club or something!

Good luck on your trip with the boys! I promise not to tell the 5 year old!

Those Crocs rock! Just don't tell DW! I've got to hold a grudge for a while to live up to my reputation!

I thought Locks of Love was great until I started growing my hair out! I haven't grown hair in seven years! I'm just not used to it. But I'm willing to do it if it helps those in need! I think it is a fantastic program!

Don't forget your lime green ribbons or pins or whatever lime green item looks good on you! And we will look for you while we are there. I'll be the guy with the funny looking hair and huge beard who is sweating, panting, and looking like he's going to pass out from the heat emminating from his head and his beard!

Okay. Now in trying to get the ADR's in order we have to decide first where we want to eat....

WCC @ Wilderness is a place we have never tried, so that goes on the list.
The Garden Grill is one of our favorites at Epcot. I really wanted to go to the Teppanyaki place for dinner and do the Garden Grill for lunch, but since they are doing a never ending renovation on the Teppanyaki place I guess that is out. I hate it when they are renovating or refurbishing when we go, I don't mind it so much when they do it when everyone else goes. (Is that wrong?) They were renovating Pirates when we went last year and they opened it up a couple of weeks after we left and we LOVE that ride, so I'm really looking forward to riding that this time, but back to ADR's. Normally at the MK we eat at Ray's Starlight Cafe (Oh, Bright Little Star, Though I'm Light Years Away From You Now............) and The Liberty Tree Tavern (there's something about Minnie in Pilgrim Garb!). So that is probably what we will do again. At AK we love the Flame Tree Barbeque place and we generally eat at the food court in the evening. So we are left with MGM. Hhhhmmmm, this is tricky. To be honest I'm not a big fan of Hollywood and Vine, The Brown Derby, Mama Melrose, 50's Prime Time, or Sci-Fi. I don't think they are bad, I've just yet to have a good experience at any of them. We let DS choose where we go there and he said (drum roll please), you guessed it, Pizza Planet. It's been years since we've been there so I think it will be cool.
So as you can see we are still working on ADR's. We have a total of six days so there will be other places we go. I'm just waiting on the DW to tell me where (hear that honey?).

As for trip preperations, here are some glimpses into how we prepare.....

DW picking out clothes.

For all those with kids you know they grow by the minute, so time to add a few T-shirts and shorts that have less stains and aren't worn out. We have a great program in town called Wee Runs that helps everyone swap clothes and make a little money on the side. We love it! You can pick up some great bargins and most of the clothes are better than your Wal Mart, Dollar Store, or any other bargain place clothes.

EXTREME Close Up

No real reason for this pick, I just thought it was funny!

36552101_0094-med.JPG
Just the boys

OK, time for a little honesty. Here is what really happens. DW does the shopping and the boys goof off. We really try to help with the shopping, but most of the time we end up getting in trouble. Wives, men are supposed to act like boys when they are around their boys. It is in our blood! Who else is going to teach them to act like idiots? It is a father's sacred rite! We must train them to act like idiots while not looking like a fool. Really you should give us credit for it. It's not as easy as it sounds.

36552101_0090.JPG
Nicolas helping Elemusing.

Actually I spoke to soon. Here is DS helping DW........Oh, sorry.....she is trying to shop and he is bugging her to let him get the Pokemon video. If I ever meet the people that created Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, or the like.....I'm going to punch them right in the nose. 10 bucks for 20 cards? Weren't baseball cards like .50 cents a pack when we were kids?

36552101_0095-med.JPG
Happy couple in action.

What is really going on is that she is still trying to shop and I am bugging her to take silly pictures with me. Never take me shopping with a camera! I was actually testing the camera out today because we got a new one recently and I'm not sure what the battery life is. So I carried it around and pulled it out about like I figured I would at WDW and took random pictures. DW was pretty gracious about it all. I get bored pretty easy with shopping and I like to do picture series where bad things befall the unsuspecting (which is usually me in set up shots, I'll try to post some later). No one gets hurt and I don't actually set up anything bad. I just think its funny to do set up shots.

All right. No more for tonight. I'll try to bring some firmed up plans soon (as soon as DW gives them to me).

Later!

:grouphug: We are such dog people too! Buddy was blessed to have a dad like you!

I am really enjoying your report popcorn:: . Having a spouse who loves Disney makes it so much nicer when planning. Your family is really cute!

I'm telling you, there is something about Mickey that naturally draws animal lovers!

I'm still hoping that your husband says 'yes'. We will be praying for you!

Okay. Here is what our schedule looks like.

Saturday - May 26th - arrive at CBR at 3:30pm and check in. Maybe go to MK, maybe go to DD, maybe stay and swim. Won't know till we get there.

Sunday - May 27th - Disney-MGM Studios - 9am to 10pm - Eat at Pizza Planet for lunch, and an ADR for supper at Sci Fi (DW's choice). No Fantasmic this year.

Monday - May 28th - Epcot (yay!) - 9am to 9pm - Garden Grill ADR for lunch.

Tuesday - May 29th - MK - EE - 8am to 10pm -Cosmic Rays for lunch. No firm plans for dinner. Spectro at 9 and Wishes at 10.

Wednesday - May 30th - Maybe Waterpark, Maybe DD. I would kind of like to go to Wolfgang Pucks. We ate there when it first opened and it was great. We ate there again in 2003 and it was okay. I would like to give it another shot. We also may do Disney Quest. DS has been talking about that.

Thursday - May 31st - AK - 9am to 8pm. Flame Tree BBQ for early lunch.

Friday - June 1st (last full day) - Either MK or Epcot (depending on crowds and such). Evening ADR for WCC (we can take the boat if we go to MK).

Saturday - June 2nd - sleep in - go swimming - shop - airport -fly home (boo!)

So that is the basic outline of the trip. Coming soon I will have daily breakdown schedules for each park.

But while your waiting, here is a picture series we did at the park last year!
