I hope the OP took my advice and didn't literally cancel her airline tickets. No advantage is gained by cancelling this early. Always the possibility of a major schedule change offering her the opportunity for a refund.

I think the OP is flying out of Newark. I don't think a major schedule change is likely. It's possible a CSR will give a refund over a minor schedule change. My point is there is no advantage to cancelling the airline reservation now vs a day or two before the flight.

Want a real long shot? Flight shows as overbooked. Go to aiport and negotiate.

Thanks to everyone who gave the good tips! I will NOT cancel yet. I know that when Delta had changed our schedule by an hour they offered to cancel the tickets at no charge, so we'll see what happens!

And to clarify one more thing, we did pay the change fees on our Arizona trip except that they were kind enough to waive my daughter's fee (her ticket was the one we got with the points). The fare had gone down so much that we still ended up with $200 in vouchers that we were able to apply to another trip (and I brought the two kids up to see my Mom in Maine; she doesn't get to see them enough either). So we'll see what happens...
