Please keep the flames to just a spark

the Founders were concerned that a popular regional candidate in a populous area may be able to garner enough votes to win the election, particularly if several other candidates divided the balance of the vote. This regionally popular first candidate would not likely have the interests of the entire number of states – the nation itself – at heart. If a candidate needed to win only the popular vote, it would possible for him to be elected President without winning a majority of anything. He would not have been elected on the basis of any sort of consensus of the states, but simply on his popularity in a particular state or in two or three heavily populated areas. Forcing a candidate to win a majority of the states’ electoral votes obliges a candidate to appeal to the entire nation – or at least to a wider portion of the population than simply a few densely populated cities or areas. It is not sufficient for a candidate to be hugely popular in Philadelphia or New York City, for example. He needs to make his case in other places in order to garner the electors necessary to gain the Presidency.

We get them here all the time as well... I think our news mentioned something recently about who was coming and where they were going for the weekly visit. I know we've had the VP, Kerry, Edwards, & the First Lady here all on the same day. Gets to be a bit much.

Leahannpen, we are just the opposite. Bush is here right now, Mrs. Edwards will be speaking later this afternoon! I'ts just that it's the same speech over and over and over. I'm not just talking about the state of PA, I'm talking the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area.

Yep, I hear you loud and clear! When they first came to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, I thought it was neat. Now it's just crazy.

I'm SO tired of hearing "I'm [insert name] and I approve this message." There's an add run just about every commercial break...

Patch'sD and Toby'sFriend, thank you both for the information!! I've read Patch's info and now I'm off to check out the website more indepth. Thanks so much!

Why do they have to say "I'm ________ and I approve this message."? I don't really remember that in the past but then in Md we rarely see many federal candidate commercials.

I'm sure there are many people on this board who would love to have had the candidates speak in their areas.

You'd be right! I'd LOVE for Bush to come up here to MA for a visit!!!!::yes::

I'm sure I'll be flamed for this but enough is enough!! Yet again President Bush is in the area speaking. If I have to hear the same speech over and over again I think I'll spit!! "He can run but he can't hide" bit is nausiating! This is at least the 15th time he's been here. He's not been alone! Kerry is here all the time too. I'm from NE Penna.. These two should be told that there are other states out there. I'm sure there are many people on this board who would love to have had the candidates speak in their areas. Can't wait to cast a vote, cross my fingers and be done with it. Sorry for the negative vent! Living in "swing state hell"
At least its more open to the public and not a private event this time.
I'm in NEPA, too, and I haven't had an interest in seeing either candidates. I've just been watching the rebroadcast either on WVIA or listing on NPR.

Personally, what I am sick of are the onslaught of commercials! LOL

It would be nice if SOMEONE would speak in Texas. The Republicans take Texas for granted and unfortunately, rightfully so.

I think is was part of the much hearalded McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform. - that also gave us the ever popular 527 groups/ads.

The commercials are on CONSTANTLY here in Pittsburgh. We get our fair share of visits, too. Kerry visited my campus for a rally on Wednesday, which was really cool... we've also offered our lovely campus to the Republicans, but for some strange reason they haven't shown up. ;)

And the "I approve of this message" stuff is awful. I hate how it's becoming a catchphrase - some cellphone salesman approves of his message now, and Jared from Subway approves his too.

I guess because NH is a state where Kerry has a shot, and because they watch Boston TV, we see the same Kerry commercial at least 10 times a day!! At first I was all excited thinking it was for us MA people and that Bush actually had a shot here but then I realized it was for NH viewers. I cannot wait for November 2!!!!!
