As many here may know, Beth is a breast cancer survivor of coming up on 3 years. She went through surgery, aggressive chemo and radiation back in the latter part of '03. If that was not enough to deal with at the time, her hubby, Jim, was diagnosed with kidney cancer while Beth was in treatment. He had surgery.
Both had been doing fine in their respective remissions when just recently Beth was diagnosed with lung cancer (another non-smoker one). She was scheduled for surgery tomorrow, Tuesday, for removal of part of her lung. As part of the pre-op procedures, they went to the hospital today to have a PICC line put in and some final CT's taken. When they got home to rest a bit, the doc called and said needed one more CT done. They went back and did that, got a bite to eat, picked up their younger son, Kevin, from Afterschool and then back home again. There were quite a few messages on their answering machine.
It seems that today's CT's showed several more masses/areas of concern and they have to be checked out ASAP. They believe this may very well be a new metastasis to the chest and abdomen from the breast cancer, and not 'just' (as if one can ever say 'just' in regards to any cancer) straight lung cancer not related to her previous breast cancer. Metastasized cancer is of a much greater concern and risk than one which would have been isolated on its own, new so to speak. Beth will have blood drawn tomorrow for tumor markers. If they are positive she will go straight to chemo, not surgery. If not, they will have to biopsy both areas, one with local, one with general anesthesia and then decide what to do.
Both Beth and Jim are numb she said. She said they feel like they are hanging on by a thread right now, 12 hours out from surgery and everything gets put on hold. Beth said she is stunned.
She asked I post this on the boards so as to keep the folks here updated. What a last minute bummer. Please do keep Beth, her hubby, Jim, and three children, Melissa, Rhett, and Kevin in your good thoughts and wishes, and if you pray, please keep her in your prayers.
A big thank you.
