I know there are numerous people on this board from Massachusetts and it's to you that I'm asking for help. Several months ago a male cat started hanging around my house. In the last month or so, he's been here almost all the time. Today I brought him to my Vet to have him checked and the news was bad. He has FIV :( http://www.lbah.com/Feline/fiv.htm

He's a wonderful cat, friendly, well behaved and very affectionate. I can not bring him into my house though. FIV is highly contagious to other cats. Dogs can't get it. Birds, ferrets, gerbils and people are all immune to this. But with other cats, it's much too dangerous.

He needs to be the only cat in the household. He needs to be an indoor only cat. I am putting flyers up in the neighborhood just in case he belongs to someone and I will do the same at the local Vets. I will also place an ad in the paper. I'm not too hopeful about finding his family. He's been living at my house for nearly 5 months.

I've also checked all the no kill shelters in our area. They won't consider him because of the health issues.

If you could find it in your heart to adopt this cat or if you can mention it to your friends, co-workers, relatives, whoever, they'd be getting a loving animal. Any of you that have other ideas on how I can find this cat a home, please post them.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Here's a couple of pictures of Dad.

Try a cat rescue rather than a shelter, someone with a FIV positive cat may be looking for a companion animal. I hope you can find a home for him soon. Are your cats vaccinated?

Oh man...I feel your pain!!! We rescued a beautiful stray very similar in looks to your cat. He had a severe infection and the vet said she would treat it but only if he was neutered at the same time. So, had to trap him since he was very wild. Got him medicated and fixed. Found a nice country club for him to live at that needed several mousers.(he would live inside and be fed some food, much better than living in the wild). But he had to have his health records up to date. I thought the bet had checked for Feline leuk but it turns out she didn't. So, back he went to get tested and yep, he tested positive. No way could I keep him. I had a new puppy and two other indoor cats. The stray, Tiggernip, mostly had stayed in the finished basement. So the other cats did have some contact with him! The country club wouldn't take him with the infection, so I had to take him to the vet to be put down. But, nice ending...a woman two towns over took him. Seems she has a huge house with a level dedicated to one particular illness. She made an exception in Tiggernips case (she already had 25 cats!!) and took him in. He lived on the feline leuk floor for 2 yrs before he died.

My step-sister in Hull does cat rescue. But she's away right now. I hope something turns up for the poor animal. Good luck.

Oh, Roberta, I wish I could take him, I'm right next door in Mansfield but I already have an indoor kitty. I hope you find someone to take him, he's beautiful!

oh my goodness he is such a handsome cat... I really hope you find him a good home soon... our thoughts are with you...

I so wish that he did not have FIV. My neighbor and good friend just lost her cat so tragically yesterday (he had a heart attack). Her cat looked SO much like "dad". She would probably have taken this cat in a heartbeat. She has 2 other FIV-negative cats in the house, so there is just no way, though:(

I wish I could take him but I am very allergic to cats and my dogs would torment the poor boy :(

I hope you find a home for the kitty soon. He's adorable. :D

Bump............we"ve got to get this big guy a good home........

I really wish I could. All my family's cats are strays but none of them have FIV so its impossible. I hope you find someone.

I can not take him myself. Monty and cats don't usually mix well. We occasionally take in fosters until we can find forever homes for them and usually we have to keep the cats and Monty apart.

I will post his info on my work bulletin though. Hopefully he will find a home. He's a sweetie.

Thank you for taking care of him.

Aw.

The site in my signature will lead you to some shelters and animal groups, there's also a message board there where you could post about him. Good luck!

Oh, thank you! That's what Dad needs. The more people who know about him, the better his chances are of finding a home.

Also, thank you so much to those who PM'd me with ideas and offers for help. We still don't have a home for this beautiful guy but at least I feel some hope.

If you have not already, make a post over at www.petloss.com
They have a great number of people over there that have helped other pets find homes, and have even set up a system to get they across country...with different posters taking a turn where they live.....to the next stop, where someone else picks up the trip.
I wish I could take him, but I have a kitty aready.

Roberta~ I wish I could help...I have 2 German Shepherds though and they don't care for cats. I had a cat situation this past week~ my oldest ds moved from one apartment to a new one and he couldn't take his (2) 9 month old kitties with him. His friend was supposed to take them, but backed out at the last minute. I put emails out to everyone I have on my list as did my dh. Unfortunately, we didn't get any takers for them. My ds called last night and another friend is bringing the cats to upstate NY to her mom's house, complete with 90 acres! Keep trying~ someone will eventually take in this beautiful cat! You have a big heart! :cat:

Though it's a good hour from you, we have a wonderful cat shelter in our area that does take FIV positive cats. Here's a link: www.catsontheweb.org . Though it's possible to find these cats a home, their illness makes it extremely difficult. However, I believe the Pat Brody Shelter has some cats they've kept for many years -- better than living on the streets, infecting other cats in the process, eh?

Good luck, and bless you for helping this poor guy.
