Please help re canceling and banking points

I hope I was getting the wrong info from the MS CM today. Suppose I make a ressie at my home resort now for next May, using 2007 points (nothing borrowed), then DH's new boss comes in in October and says we can't take vacation then, so we have to cancel. Our second choice for vacation is not until next F&W Festival, which is after our 2008 use year begins (our UY is August). So we cancel our vacation still 6 months out, then bank those points to rebook in fall, 2008. Can we do that? The CM today said we could rebook, but for before August, 2008. Can't we bank and use those points next year?

Since nothing was borrowed, and if October is still in your banking time, I don't see why you couldn't bank the points for that ressie. I'm sorry to hear that MS has given incorrect information. Maybe she was thinking you were going to be cancelling close to the May ressie, and the points would be in holding

There are cut-off dates for when you can bank, and how much you can bank. I could be wrong, but I think as long as you bank your points with 6 months left on your UY it'll be fine. We have a Feb UY and had to bank by July 31st to bank all of our 07 points. So I would think that if you cancel your ressie far enough out to get your points back in your acct you could then bank them and use them for next fall.

I'm sure someone with more experience will come along soon and explain better

Sometimes it helps to make a small Use Year chart for your particular Use Year month.

An August chart looks like this:

Use Year...Vacation Dates
2007....Aug 1, 2007 thru July 31, 2008
2008....Aug 1, 2008 thru July 31, 2009
2009....Aug 1, 2009 thru July 31, 2010


You make a reservation for May 2008. That date is in your 2007 UY so it uses 2007 UY points.

You cancel the reservation. The points are then returned to their 2007 Use Year.

You can bank 100% of your points within the first 6-months of your use year, so for an August UY, that includes Aug,Sep,Oct,Nov,Dec,Jan. Thus if you cancel the reservation prior to Jan 31, 2008, you can bank 100% of those 2007 UY points that were returned and bank them into UY 2008. They become 2008 UY points with the designation that they are banked points.

UY 2008 is for vacation dates from Aug 1, 2008 thru July 31, 2009. F&W is in October 2008 which is in your 2008 UY. You simply tell the CM to use the banked points to make that October 2008 reservation. (Actually they should do this automatically, but it never hurts to verify)

You will still have your regular 2008 UY points which you can use for another vacation within your 2008 Use Year, or you could bank them into UY 2009.

Unless I'm missing something here, the CM gave you the before August information because that's your 11 month booking window. You can't book your October 2008 ressie yet. You've still got a few months to wait. Right?
