Please help me pick a camera! Point-n-Shoot vs. DSLR? Help please!!

Thanks for all the input everyone!

now I know what I am going to ask has been beaten to death everywhere but....

I have it down to th Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel Xti.

Any input on which?

I am leaning towards the Nikon but I am unsure about always having to use a viewfinder. That is true that you always have to use a viewfinder, correct?

So pleae everyone if you can help me decide on which one. I know the Nikon lens are limited if I want the autofocus and I know there are many more lenses available with the Canon.

So thanks for the help so far, but can anyone help me decide on which one?

Thanks!!

Both of those only use the viewfinder. Live view is not as helpful as you might think anyway. It is mainly for strange angles and tripod work.

Have you considered the other brands and most importantly, have you actually handled all the different cameras?

I have handled both of them. I like them both. The only difference is that the Canon had the live view and I thought that would reallly help but if people say it is not as helpful as many think then I think I will go with the Nikon D40.

People are reccomending higher versions of the Nikon but that is too much money.

So do you think that the Nikon D40 is a good choice for me even though I have limited lens choices with the autofocusing?

Thanks!

The XSi has live view, not the XTi. I don't personally like any of your options, but I am not you.

One thing that I don't think has been mentioned here is that when you buy a dslr, you are buying into a system. If you buy good quality lenses, you will likely keep them much longer than the camera body, so you might want to look at the lens lineups for the cameras you're considering and the camera bodies that are up the line (the particular models might not be available by the time you're ready to upgrade, but at least you can get some idea of your future options).

As for whether the D40 is a good choice, I think it is, but then I'm a Nikon gal so I'm not unbiased. I personally think the focus motor issue is overblown--there are plenty of great lenses available for it, and some new "fast" options aside from the 50mm f/1.8. But there are loads of satisfied Canon users out there too. You'd likely be happy and learn a lot with either one.
