I guess it depends on whether you want people to see your design coming or going!
If on the back, folks behind you might comment and you could hear their comments (we did) but if on the front, they'll be past you by the time they comment on your design (unless you're entering a store for instance).
For dinner functions (Jiko's and the like), we used just a small design on the upper chest which really looked nice. In the parks we typically had the large designs on the front (except for at DAK where we had a large design on the front & the back b'c I couldn't design which I liked better for that park).
