I was talking to DD7 last night about a story I read when I was a child. She wants to find the same book but I can not remember the title or author. Does this sound familiar?

A sister and her younger brother run away from home and take up residence in a museum. They hide in the bathroom stalls at closing until the security sweep is done, take baths in the wishing fountain, and scoop up change from the fountain to buy food. I think they return home at the end of the story.

Anyone?

Thanks!
Peggy

I remember this story!! I don't remember the title or author but I'm just SURE I remember this story.

Don't worry, someone on the DIS will know! I'm forever amazed (and amused??!!) at the questions that are answered on the CB! :p

Wow. That's the one! Thank you so much, phamton. I knew the DIS was the right place to ask. :sunny:

This is a great book and a huge favorite in our house.

I was like Doe....remembered the story but not the name.

I read it to my children this summer and they loved it. I first heard when my fourth grade teacher read it to our class.

omg I loved that book! I read it back in elemantary school...man, the memories are comin' back :jumping1:

I'd never heard of this book.
After reading the amazon.com write up...I purchased it.
Should be an nice addition to our collection of childrens books.

Thanks for bringing this book to my attention!

I remember this book, too!

It says reading age is 9 - 12, but do you think a first grader who loves to read and is an above-average reader would be able to enjoy it? I'd love to get it for my dd.

Oh this brings back so many memories! Loved this book.

Do you know it was made into a movie (in the 70s?) with Ingrid Bergman as Mrs. Frankenweiler?

I'm not sure. I plan to get a copy and re-read it myself. If I think it is too difficult for DD to read herself, we'll just make it a "read aloud" at bedtime.

So glad this book was able to bring back fond memories for so many. And THANKS again to phamton for solving my mystery.

I've been an elementary school teacher for many years. I'm pretty good at remembering kids' books even obscure ones. Now if I can just remember where I park my car at the mall, I'll be happy. ;)
