I LOVE my Siamese cat Mushu but he is driving me NUTS because he chews on ALL the plants in my house whether they're real or fake!!! I just got back from the store and I bought a small arrangement of fall colored flowers in a flower pot. I put it on the kitchen table and when I went back to the kitchen 2 minutes later he had his face buried in it and there was cat saliva on the flowers! He chews EVERY fake plant or flower that I have in my house, as well as a real plant.

What can I do to stop him?? He's one year old, very healthy, eats and drinks well.

Should I just call the vet and see what he says?? I have a lot of new silk flowers and plants out for fall and I'm tired of yelling at the cat. I yell at the cat more than I yell at my sons! LOL

I don't know about your cat, but my cat is about 10 years old and when we have flowers out she tries to shove her head in the vase and drink from it, even though it isn't big enough for her head and she has her own water.

Nothing. I have a 15 year old cat and I have just given up on flowers of any kind, dried, silk and real.

What I have done is put the flowers out when I'm home and lock them in a room the cat doesn't go in when I'm out and at night. It's easier now because he sleeps most of the time. Since you have a kitten, it will be harder to even walk out of a room with flowers.

You could try a water pistol and snag him when he's gets into them, but it as far as kittens go, it's only a temporary solution.

Lots of Luck!

There is a spray you can get at the petstore that tastes bad to them, you could spray that on your flowers and plants. Or you could make your own mixture of water and cayenne pepper or the like and spray it on the flowers and plants.

I would suggest the caynne pepper also. Another idea is to get some cat grass. Often pets chew on plants to aid in digestion. My kitties used to eat the plants all the time, but once i got cat grass they stopped, and just chewed on the grass.

My cat takes apart my silk flowers. I don't say to much to her, I figure she doesn't know what I am sputtering off at the mouth for. I just chalk it up to experience and do not buy anymore flowers both real or fake in my house. I do have to green plants in baskets that were at the funeral home for my mom, they are 5 1/2 yrs old and still living, I have them on a smaller table with nothing by them so she can't even try to go after them that way.

My grandma used to sprinkle black pepper or paprika on the soil.

Mushu is king! He should be allowed to do whatever he wants. Humans are here to honor and serve him.;) :p :teeth:

Thanks for the replies and advice, everyone! I am relieved to hear that this is normal because I was beginning to get worried that Mushu was needing, or looking for, some sort of nutrient from the plants. I guess it's just a bad cat habit.

Mushu definitely knows what I'm yelling at when I find him chewing my silk flowers because I stomp my foot and yell "NO!" at the same time and he looks at me with a guilty look on his face and then runs! :teeth:

catsrule: In our house, Mushu IS the King, and he knows it. He is so spoiled by all of us. He sleeps in bed with DH and I all night then in the morning he wakes us up by jumping on us and wrestling in our bed with one of his toys. His latest victim is a stuffed "Kaa" (the snake from The Jungle Book) that we bought at the Disney Store a few years ago. Kaa now is totally uncoiled with his stuffing hanging out, thanks to Mushu. lol Then he follows DH through his morning routine, then wakes up DSs. After everyone has left the house, except for Mushu and I, Mushu will pick one of his favorite spots to sleep in all day. Today he decided he'd sleep under my comforter, so like a dope I didn't make my bed today because I didn't want to disturb him :teeth: See what I mean, this cat IS the king around here. Hehehe. He sleeps all day till DSs come home, then he plays with them in the evening. Usually Mushu and DS11 are inseparable all evening. When it's DSs bedtime, he runs right onto DS14's bed and takes his place with him. After sleeping with DS14 for a couple of hours, he KNOWS when its DH and my bedtime and that's when he joins us in bed for the night. This cat has THE LIFE. And he wants my silk plants too!! That's just not right!!!!!!
:p ;)

yay for Mushu! Him and Simba must be brothers.:teeth: Mushu is getting the royal treatment that he deserves. :teeth:

Two words: Bitter apple.

If that doesn't work: Sticky Paws.

If that doesn't work: Give up. ;)

Eating plants is perfectly normal. Just make sure you don't have any plants around that are toxic to cats! Your vet should have a list of poisonous plants, or if you'll give me a while to find where my brain is hiding after that computer class test I just got back from, I'll see if I can dig up the list for you if you want ;)

Silly me... I didn't explain what Bitter apple was. It's a spray or gel you can get at most pet stores and it's designed to be sprayed/rubbed on plants, furniture, power cords, or other things you don't want animals chewing on. It tastes very, very bitter and cats and dogs really don't like the taste (as a rule, you sometimes get exceptions) so usually it will train animals to not chew on the sprayed item. We did this with Blaze and Sage and power cords when we first brought them home and haven't had a problem with Blaze since with power cords. Should be doing that with more items for Skye but we haven't had a chance to and he seems to leave cords alone.
